Estimate of worth for this rig

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to buy my first rig and a friend at my DZ is selling this:
Flexon container (DOM '93, looks brand new, no hard housings, collapsible pilot chute but no check window)

Sabre 1 170 (not sure of DOM but it only has 10 jumps on it)

PD Reserve 176 (DOM '93, i think it has 2 or 3 rides on it)

Cypress (currently getting the 8 year, has 4 years left)

Date of manufacture 1993 means that most of the bugs had been worked out by the time yours was made.
Tuck tab updates are so complex that you need factory patterns.
Hard housing retrofit is so easy that any FAA Senior Rigger can do it.
I am curious about who did the Cypres retrofit, because there were at least three different retrofits done at the factory and some are more graceful than others.

im not sure who did the cypress retrofit and im not sure if he knows.
So would you say its a good container? because thats what im worried about, i don't want any flaps to open on me. I know not to freefly with it but i dont want them to flap around in freefall.
Also do you have an estimate on how much is fair to pay?

I have owned at least 3 different Flexons and I do really like that rig. I still have one that I jump now and then.. They are not that fashionable now with the Tuck-Tabs though I never had an issue with. That said, you are more paying for the Main and Reserve and 4 years on a Cypress. If the Sabre has under 10 Jumps and is still Crispy then that is the big value. For the Hard housing swap, VERY EASY and you could get the housings at the right length for that model from RI with a phone call . Last time I did it, I think it was under $50 delivered but that was awhile ago and I don't remember for sure..

My calculations come up as follows:

Flexon complete container good shape ~ $400
Sabre $800-1000
Reserve $400
Cypress with 4 yrs left and you not having to pay for the service $400

Knock $50 or so off for the Hard housings and you get approx $1950 to $2150

My initial thought was pretty close to that giving about $2000

Again you have to look where the value is in the purchase and break each component out. If he is willing to sell at under $2K, you like the fit of the rig and the canopies are correct in sizing for you.... well..... it is not a bad deal as I see it..

Just my $0.02

Sorry, your only hope is with land and house only,,your theory won't apply to cars, rigs etc.....for it to work ,you would have to find a " steal " everytime,,,there are just not a lot of "steals" out there for everyone,,and i'm sorry, but i'm not giving anybody anything for 10 - 15 year old gear,,just my .02 cnts ....:D
