Why is there a helicopter flying so low around Chicago?

This is the picture that I just got with my camera. Yes, that helicopter is flying lower than the height of the skyscrapers. It was flying right above me. Yes, that's the Sears Tower.

Does anybody in Chicago have a clue as to why there would be a helicopter flying around so low?

Back when I was working in Downtown LA, helicopters would often go flying around like that. Most of them had those little camera balls on the bottom so they could shoot footage for a movie, tv show, etc.

This copter may be doing something similar, though I do not see a camera mount.

I have no idea of what they're doing. They flew a few miles southeast, and they were back here about 10-15 minutes later. It's all very odd.

I've been here for awhile (over two years, and I interned here a few years ago), and I've never seen anything like that!!!!!

Well, when I say "often" I mean once every two or three months. I cannot imagine there being a whole lotta need for aerial shots of the loop.

On top of that, the loop is much bigger than downtown LA, so your chances of seeing one are less.

The fly a few miles, then come back sounds exactly like the movie thing to me. Problem is I didn't see the camera mount.

It is just a theory, though jtval's is sexier.

They filmed a part of Spiderman 2 just a few blocks from my office, and they didn't use a helicopter!

It's not a news chopper - none of them here in town have skids. I think they all use the Bell 222

Also, they re routed some of the El Trains today - and I noticed an extra long security check at Halsted today. Who knows.

Yeah ... it's probably a movie ... my brother-in-law lives in Printers Row, accross the street from Dearborn Station ... he's seen low-flying choppers go past his second-story window several times before. I think they filmed part of an ER episode down there once too.

Highly doubtful that this is a "movie" helicopter. And as far as I know, it would be almost impossible for a feature to pull a permit to fly a chopper this low on a week day during work hours in the center of a city Trust me, I've tried...

Printers Row - beautiful area. How I wish I purchased property in that area about 5 years ago.

ER does a few every so often, I Robot did a bunch. Back when they were trying the Death Of Superman movie a few years ago they did a lot around the Sears Tower because Lex's office was going to be at the top of it.

I think Batman finished up here a couple weeks ago. There are a ton of movies being filmed here because of all the breaks Daley is giving them.
