Islandcool 0 #2 November 3, 2004 Remember all the lawns you cut for some extra cash when you were a kid? Well you didn't declare that income and it was taxable. After fines and interest you now owe $348,000.00 Visa and Master Card is accepted. Please mail payment back in enclosed envelope. Have a Great Day. slug 1 #3 November 3, 2004 Hi Funks Don't sweat it unless you need to. They could just be asking you for a "clarification". We got a couple of those clarification letters a long time ago, worst case you got to pay with a little extra tacked on for loan shark interest and penalities. If your wrong the longer you mess with them the more you'll pay. Good luck R.I.P.

usedtajump 1 #5 November 3, 2004 I got one about four years ago saying I'd overpaid my taxes by about $1100.00 and they sent me a refund. The older I get the less I care who I piss off.
jumpergirl 0 #6 November 4, 2004 Travis got a letter from the IRS a few months ago, but it wasn't a registered letter. They told him he owed over $800 after fines and late fees for not paying $200 back in 1994. Hopefully yours is better news.

hookitt 1 #8 November 4, 2004 Funny how you can over pay year after year and are only given a couple years to claim it. But the statute of limitations to pay them money that's "owed" is timeless. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... jumpergirl 0 #9 November 4, 2004 Travis filed his taxes for last year and expected a return of about $800. Instead he got a letter saying he owed that money to the IRS and he was not getting his refund! Have a nice day.

But the statute of limitations to pay them money that's "owed" is timeless. Not exactly true. The statute of limitations is three years. Exceptions are: 1.) Fraud = no limitations 2.) omissions in excess of 25% of gross income = six years 3.) There is a laundry list of other stuff, but the first two are the highlights. Also, if you are due a refund, you have only three years to file and claim it.

mouth 0 #16 November 4, 2004 YIKES...being audited sucks. I was sick the entire year that it took to get it settled. Paid a ton in freaking expensive tax lawyer and accountant fees only to be told (thankfully) that they finally understood. I guess better late than never, but geez. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit.

Dumpster 0 #18 November 4, 2004 I got a letter like that several years ago, not from the IRS but from New York State. Seems my federal and state returns didn't jive, and I owed NY money with interest. Took them two years to find me, since I had moved from NY to Illinois in the interim. So of course they charged me lots of interest. I think the total was like 600 bucks. The next year they sent me a check for like 400 bones, said they were auditing thier records and found out I had overpaid something. Go figure, eh? Easy Does It
