weegegirl 2 #3 November 4, 2004 A bunch of us Michigan skydivers just started climbing together this year. For similar reasons more than likely. It's a lot of fun. Get a buddy and go to your local climbing gym and take a short 20 minute class. Then just go for it. Better if you have a buddy.
lifewithoutanet 0 #4 November 4, 2004 JP, I've been climbing for years. Well, until I took up skydiving and moved to SoCal, that is. Haven't climbed since I left Colorado. I have a pretty extensive climbing/mountaineering library. I'll bring a few of my favorites out this weekend. Let me know if there's anything in particular you're looking for, discipline wise. Edited to add a few links: Joshua Tree Moab Climbing Magazine California Gyms Ouray -C.

CanuckInUSA 0 #6 November 4, 2004 QuoteSo anyone know of any good books on the subject? Freedom of the Hills is considered the bible to many climbers. It's a mountaineering book, but also covers rock climbing. It's got everything you need to know about climbing. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

kelpdiver 2 #8 November 4, 2004 Climbing walls/faces or mountains? If the latter, the LA division of the Sierra Club runs a very good program: BMTC - basic mountaineering training class. I took it with my mother in 1990 and she chaired the program until recently. It's non political, if that matters, but will not do very technical climbing due to insurance concerns. But it's a good start.

(Nearish to Elsinore/Perris) "Mountaineering - the Freedom of the Hills" by the Mountaineers (Seattle). Canuckinusa has the URL above. Contains EVERYTHING. mh edit to add - it's the one the Mountaineers themselves use for their basic school, and it was the one I used 6 years ago when I went thru mountaineering school here in Seattle. . ltdiver 3 #14 November 4, 2004 Dang. Climbing must be in the air. I have a co-worker who just started where I work. She's an avid rock climber. Now, she's agreed to go skydiving and I've reciprocated with joining her where she climbs. Looks like we'll both have new stories to tell soon. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

base582 0 #16 November 4, 2004 Hi JP, "Big Rock", at nearby Lake Perris is a fine place to start climbing. It has about 25 bolted routes on easy-angled granite, all grades from 5.5 (easy) to 5.11 (you first!) It's rarely crowded on weekdays and it's only 15 mins drive and a short hike from the DZ.Try that. If you need gear I have everything except climbing shoes..you'll need those... don't try learning to climb in sneakers..it sucks. And if you like that, Joshua Tree is awesome! Lloyd.
