winsor 236 #26 November 4, 2004 QuoteIt was a joke. 100% a joke. If I had the money I would have bought a Fat Boy, but I have a nice bike that I could afford (and the payments are about the same $$ as a tank of gas in my truck). Someday I'll build the custom bike I want to build, based on a HD frame and engine. I have a custom bike I built myself - HD frame and engine - and can pretty much guarantee I spent a lot less on it than you did on yours. In all fairness, I've had it for 17 years so I got in when you could actually get a basket case for cheap. Nevertheless, it's way amusing (and truly uncivilized). flyingferret 0 #27 November 4, 2004 umm...I am on the net a lot...and I still find myself asking, where in the world did that source pic come from? As for the HD debate, it is all jokes, just like RW vs. FF. 90% of it is just styling and preference. The one thing I will say is that the 88B is an amazing engine, and was as much my reason to buy HD as style. Additionally, resale on a harley is dang near constant, if you are looking at it from that point. flyingferret 0 #31 November 4, 2004 Yeah, I really want a buell firebolt just for a go fast toy. Maybe track it a few times. AggieDave 6 #35 November 4, 2004 QuoteBut I got an 02 Sportster 1200XLH w/ 1200 miles on it for what you paid for yours Hehe, I don't fit on Sportsters. I feel like I'm humping a football...someday we'll meet and you'll understand why a Sportster wouldn't work for me. My Vulcan, although its an 800, its only about 2" shorter then a HD softtail and its as wide. So I actually fit on this bike.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
PhillyKev 0 #36 November 4, 2004 I'm 6'2" 200lbs. Extended foot controls and pull back drag bars. No problemo. In fact, I'm stretched out more than on my buddies stock wide glide.

It came that way Along with slip on screamin' eagle pipes and air filter, rejetted carb, and custom paint job. These guys are great. They've even sold several to guys over in Iraq. They threw in some custom front signals since the stocks were cut off, and a La Perla seat. http://www.americanclassicmotors.net/sportsters.htm Warning...sound. AggieDave 6 #39 November 4, 2004 Sounds like you got yourself a good bike at a good price. That's awesome! I'm still really happy with my bike, I really like it. I think my next bike will be this one: Clicky and I'll lower the bike I have now, get a custom seat that's not as thick and narrower as well as get some pull back risers so it'll fit Morgan (she's only 5'1"). And I'll get to put this one together, but I'll have all the parts so I don't have to worry about forgetting something small. PhillyKev 0 #40 November 4, 2004 Cool...wasn't trying to bust you. In fact your enthusiasm when you got yours was one of my inspiring factors to get off my ass and actually buy one. Just know that you dig HD too, and wanted to point out that if the opportunity comes for you to trade your current ride in, you can probably find one that fits you and your wallet. That's a nice bike, too AND CHEAP....holy shit. I'm probably going to get a softail next year and trick it out for long rides. I've been piecing the sporty together to be an all around everything bike since it's my only motorized transportation now. But when I get the new one I'm going to strip it down and freak it out for an around town short tripper. I've got a buddy whose nephew builds custom bikes and has the shop to do everything. Hung out and rode with them a few times and got offered use of the shop and their help any time I wanted after hours. We rode down to Atlantic City last weekend. I was doing 80 and the one guy blew past me on his new monster made of cadillac parts with a subaru turbo bolted on.
flyingferret 0 #41 November 4, 2004 The bottom line is too each his own, and the motorcycle is the ultimate in custom expression. But I just don't like sportsters. They are spindly looking, and until 04 the tanks were just ugly. But then again that is my opinion. I like fat and low, and I hate seeing struts. So, yep I am a softail snob and I own a Fat Boy. It is not where I want it yet, but it is getting there. I am not sure they ever are completely finished. I still want legend air suspension, so I can ride 'chort' or carry gear. I just dig that fat retro look, and a sporty will never get it. But....we all need more than one anyway :) I have ridden with dave plenty, and his bike with no windsheild, burly guy in bandana looks as tough as mine :) Guys I work with, I am in the foreground: http://www.tripmaster.com/wildbunch.jpg-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. Gravitymaster 0 #45 November 5, 2004 I'm thinking about putting white walls on my black Fatboy. What do you think? I almost went ahead last month when I replace both tires at 14K.
AggieDave 6 #46 November 5, 2004 IMO, Shovel head with a springer front end and a bobbed rear fender, white walls are cool. Vintage Indian, whitewalls are cool, modern bikes...not so much. I've seen some new custom built bikes that had whitewalls that looked really good, but they were built to look old school and had knuckle head and shovel head engines, as well as bobber stylings.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." flyingferret 0 #50 November 5, 2004 It is interesting to me from a marketing standpoint. Because it appears....almost....as though these may be a response to some of the vintage looks on the market right now. Personally, I like the stock softail look and then customize from there. But....if these two really are a response to others on the market, it means a few things: 1. the imports have actually affected the mainstream giant 2. Harley wants all market segments.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
