Vallerina 2 #26 November 5, 2004 Quotebut it is a public forum if ANYONE asks a question people of all sexes will reply.( just wanted to make sure you understood that) Sangiro made a point of telling men that they should be careful in the women's forum. There is some sexism in skydiving. We're not saying that all or even most men are like that. I would say that maybe 5% of men are sexist and hand out condescending advice. For me it's not really a problem because I put them in their place, and they leave me alone. However, it is a problem for some women. The discussion should not have been used to prove that sexism in the sport doesn't exist. The discussion should've been used to help women get around some of the barriers which they may not have had to deal with before. (I'm used to it. I've heard all my life that women aren't good at math. I'm used to proving people wrong!)There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
PhillyKev 0 #27 November 5, 2004 I'm trying to figure out why men are posting in the women only forum. I don't even read it. I'm not a woman....who cares. I'm guessing if they wanted an opinion from someone regardless of gender, they wouldn't post a question there, they'd post it in a topical forum. SkydiveNFlorida 0 #28 November 5, 2004 Quoteso that I can tell women that are trying to pass on valuable information that because it came from a women it means nothing. Not all women feel that way, so please do not think that we do. The thread I started in the Women's forum was started there because it would remain in view above the "I like PB&J" & "My cat is funny" threads that take up the first 5 pages of bonfire. It was a serious topic and the best place I could think for it to go was the Women's forum. I, personally, did not have a problem with men contributing USEFUL info to the thread. It is when it becomes a flamefest or tells women that it's their own fault that it becomes a problem for me. But, hell, I agree with you that if there is a Women's forum, there should also be a Men's forum. It would just be difficult to moderate and that is probably why there isn't one -A
windcatcher 0 #29 November 5, 2004 Sexism...exists everywhere! Some men won't take advice from a woman, and some women won't take advice from a man. There are chauvinistic men, and there are feministic females. Simple math to sum this all up: man does not = woman. Woman does not = man. We are all different and each gender DOES have strengths and weaknesses. How hard can that be to figure out? Mother to the cutest little thing in the world... SkydiveNFlorida 0 #33 November 5, 2004 QuoteQuoteI personally tend to seek out advice specifically from men, seems they are pretty good at that sort of thing ( yeah, I'm young and probably naive according to that statement, right?) Interesting...I tend to seek advice from people who are experienced and respected in the field in which I'd like advice. Seeking advice based on gender is ignorant and sheltered. _Pm I couldn't agree more! But, I wasn't really expecting any better from windcatcher, either, to be honest, so I wasn't going to respond until I saw that someone else caught that that was absolutely RIDICULOUS! -A

SkydiveNFlorida 0 #35 November 5, 2004 QuoteQuoteSeeking advice based on gender is ignorant and sheltered. When I was 12, I was seeking advice from only females about how to use a tampon! It's not always ignorant and sheltered. Guys have a different center of balance, so their bodies fly differently than women's. Val, Craichead also mentioned : "I tend to seek advice from people who are experienced and respected in the field in which I'd like advice." I think that says it all right there. Of course men wouldn't have much info on how to use a tampon. Everyone has things that are out of their realm of knowledge, but you are really cutting out a lot of good info if you're seeking advice only from one gender rather than seeking advice based on who has experience with what you're asking for, imo. -A ** for the record, this is not about my topic in the women's forum. That was not a thread asking for advice, it was asking why a myth continues to exist, and thinking about it further, I think that it was a good move to post it in the women's forum so that women get the chance to discuss that without a bunch of one liners. Thanks.

Guys have a different center of balance, so their bodies fly differently than women's. Right, which is why I said I tend to seek advice from someone who is experienced and respected in the field in which I require advice. Obviously more women than men will be more experienced and knowledgeable in regards to tampon use and center of gravity issues in skydiving, but that doesn't mean that all women are familiar and experienced with these issues. What would've happened if you asked just females who had never used a tampon? Or freefly advice from just women who only have belly jumps? Unlikely and extreme scenarios, but seeking advice from someone just because they're male or female is silly. _Pm__ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

Girlfalldown 0 #45 November 5, 2004 OK EVERYBODY JUST SIMMER DOWN NOW! (yeah I know I'm late as usual) Skydiving is a male dominated sport. That's just a plain ole fact. I get some wonderful information from men, both on the dropzone and from this website. I truly appreciate that. It is nice though to be able to post something in a womens only forum to get the point of view from just women. I think the reason the women go off on guys in there is because the whole point of posting was to get a womans perspective. We've already heard from the guys in general skydiving and the rest of the site. It's not that we don't appreciate it. It's just not what we were looking for. I think that's about all I wanted to say. It's just my opinion so take it for what it's worth. -------------- (Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take my posts seriously.)
