happythoughts 0 #1 November 8, 2004 This weekend, I swam with some manatees. One girl was a little frightened by them because of their size (even though they are gentle vegetarians). They are 250-300 lbs, slow-moving, nostrils like a horse, some back-hair, and a little algae growth near the tail. I said, "Go ahead and pet it. Just close your eyes and pretend it's your boyfriend." Women are so easily upset. It's not like I made something up.

Women always say that looks don't matter, but you rarely see them dating homely guys. I thought it was a refreshing lack of superficiality. After I complimented her on that, she seemed to get moody. You just can't be nice to some people. A friend was floating over one and it decided to come up for air. It practically lifted her out of the water. The easiest way is to float in front of them with your arms close. Your shadow resemble theirs and they think you may be another manatee, so they come up close and look at you (they don't see well). When you give the shark signal (fin on head), new people aren't sure if you mean "run, a shark" or "hey, come look at this". People are afraid of new stuff, even if it benign as manatees are. They were like gentle giants, though, and so curious! They kept surfacing to nudge up against us and check us and our gear out.
