I'm fasting tomorrow....

Recommended Posts

...for Ramadan. That means no food, no drinks, no smoking, no gum, no negative thoughts or speech from sunrise to sunset.

The Muslim student association at my school is raising money for hurricane relief by getting non-Muslim students to participate for just one day in fasting. Sponsors have volunteered food or money for every non-Muslim student that fasts for the day.

Besides raising money, the real purpose of fasting is to be reminded of the poor and those who are suffering from the pain of hunger and thirst. It's also a way to cleanse the body and practice self-control.

For me, it's a short twelve hours (of no WATER! :o How do I do that!?). For them, it's an entire month.

There is an iftar to break fast at sundown followed by a meal contributed by local Muslim families.

I have a lot of respect for anyone that can fast for an entire month. I'm struggling with the prospect of a single day! :)

Hey girl!
Fasting can be extremely hard, your flesh fights back, but you can make it. Just a little warning, your body might get a little upset at you from not feeding what it wants, so you might get a little irritated, dizzy, or tired.

Just a thought :)

good for you! i did that last year because my best friend is muslim and it was kinda like my way of saying "yeah i respect your religious views" and stuff like that.

the actual fasting wasnt all that hard, especially since ramadan usually falls when the daylight is pretty short. you can just do like they do and have a HUGE breakfast before sunrise and you'll be just a little hungry by the time the sun goes down.:)

you forgot no sex...

12 hours should be OK.

actually they have motivations to do Ramadan, it's normal to them, it makes them good muslims.

usually during Ramadan the rythm of living is a bit slower too... Helps you keep your energy longer...

***no negative thoughts or speech

That's fucking insane.

No, just very very hard. Kinda the point, I gather.

It's more the ceasation of -ve thoughts, once you identify one you stop it. It's like meditation you can't acutally stop thought processes (as a beginer) but you can change them.

from what my muslim friends have told me, there is no smoking or sex during the entire period of Ramadan, day or night. you can break the fast when the sun goes down but theres no nookie allowed - or smoking. i actually cancelled my tip to Afghanistan because it was gonna be the middle of Ramadan and i didnt feel like dealing with it - besides, there is always next year..AND i used that money to buy a rig:)

havent been to Iraq yet, been close (about 1 mile from the border in Turkey).
actually no plans for Iraq in the near future, too dangerous. however, i DO like to see things for mysellf and not rely on the media. you would be (pleasently) suprised if you ever visited Afghanistan. :)

OMG for a second I thought the thread said you're FISTING tomorrow! :o Imagine my disappointment to find out you're talking about food! :D

Are you sure that during Ramadan they don't even drink water?! Sounds like a very UNhealthy thing to do for twelve hours.

I know I could not / would not do it. I'd have a mother of a headache after that long with nothing to eat or drink.

Could this be why Muslims have been... Oh, wait, this isn't Speakers Corner... :P

It's also hard for me to believe.

If the Muslim world were being true to this, why did I read the other day about how they have upsurges of violence during Ramadan? Why does there end up being ANY upsurges of violence during Ramadan? Is the violence only banned from sunrise to sunset?

Yep, no food or drink. Seriously, right about now...forget the food...I can't quit lusting after water fountains! :D Okay...so five more hours until the iftar. I turned down gum today, hell, I can do anything now! :)
