lynxie 0 #1 November 9, 2004 Have you, or do you know someone who lived in a buddhist monastary in asia for a few months to learn more about meditation and the life of a buddhist? -- "If you can dream it, you can DO IT!" --
craichead 0 #2 November 9, 2004 I don't know anyone who has lived in a Buddhist monastary in Asia, but I have a few friends who became novice monks for a summer here in the Chicagoland area. There are a couple Thai Buddhist temples in the 'burbs. For a couple summers, I lived in the temple while I was in Thai school. Every morning we had to go to meditation and prayer. On Sundays we would have the Buddhist equivalent of Sunday School. _Pm__ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)
marcandalysse 0 #3 November 9, 2004 Yes I know several people who have lived in monasteries. What country interests you? The southeast asian ones are more strictly meditational. (theravada styles) East Asian (chinese, japanese) or Tibetan have a collection of practices different from the southeast asians of thailand, burma etc (mahayana styles) There are many places that offer training to english speakers. Also, you don't have to go through the rigourous monks training, there are other laymen's trainings available. You could spend time at a zen monastery in Japan, or a place in Thailand very easily. The costs will vary. Plus, it is almost a certainty that your country has buddhist centers where you can start learning. PM me if you want more detail and advice... your brother in dharma, Marc
