Belly dance costumes: the thick plottens

Recommended Posts

Some of you might remember this post: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1330777#1330777 Basically, I thought that I was going to be able to pick any costume that I wanted as long as it went with the overall color scheme. At the very least, I thought that everyone would buy the same, plain costume for cheap.

I was wrong. Three or four of the ladies in the group all want to have the exact same, expensive costume. I don't mind spending a little more on something that I like or something that I can wear again, but this falls into neither category. Is it just me or is this hideous: http://www.dahlal.com/new_site/pages/Product_Costume.php?CategoryID=1&BigCatID=1145&Stock=ES13&all_IDs=1157%2C&BigCatName=Egyptian&CatName=Full+Costumes&artistSort=&artist=&Sess_dahlal=09e96128575fd64c4b140a84a3a28df8

It's expensive. I'm only going to wear it once for about 4 minutes. It reminds me of really bad Christmas decorations. I told the ladies that I will not buy it, so I might be the only one not wearing it! Oh well!

The one that Sunny posted was insanely expensive!

I have good (but expensive) taste. :P Anyhoo, that outfit is hideous. I can't beleive those other girls like it. Ugh, i know i would suck it up and buy it just to go along with the group, but you're way stronger than me. Don't give in to those tasteless little twits!! :)

Possibly a reason why the other ladies like it so much.

Actually, you might be on to something there. However, if they want more material, they should've gone with something less gaudy. They'll just look like big gold and purple pieces of fabric on stage.

When you were a kid and did dnace recitals or class plays, did you pick your own costume regardless of what everyone else wore?

Personally, I don't think its THAT bad. Its a costume that's going to be worn on stage, its less expensive than the other options and if you say no and wear your own thing you will a) stick out like a sore thumb and b) alienate the other ladies in your group. Unless you can find something suitable thats far less expensive I don't really get your objection.

If the teacher told us what to wear, I would do it. When I was a kid, we'd never spend $100 on just one dance costume either.

Oh, there are many more costumes that are far less expensive! One of the women in the group who also has an objection to it sent us links to costumes that are simple and cost about $50. They look decent.

Yup it's horrid.

I did the belly dancing thing right aobut the time I started skydiving. It's fun! What gets me is this "troupe" thing at all the shows. Um, bellydancing is singular person show. It was never meant to be done with more ppl or in a group.

Well, that's what my teacher told me anyhow.

You should get together with her and stage a coup!;)

Of course when I did shows and dance recitals in school, most of our costumes were made by our mothers!:$ And I also agree that $100.00 does seem high. But the alternatives you posted cost even more, so I just don't think you'd get far with the price objection. I do think the ladies in the group need to get together and decide what's appropriate to spend on a costume for the performance, and come to an agreement as a group. Funny, this is reminding me of last night's episode of Desperate Housewives!

It originated from women dancing together, so true belly dancers did perform in troupes.

So, aren't belly dancing costumes supposed to emphasize that body part (and not the rest)? ;)

ltdiver

Alot of the traditional costume covered the belly aswell, the more western one show much more skin

I am in SHOCK. Poor Val. :(

That is incredibly, disgustingly HIDEOUS!!! Are you girls also cheerleading for the Lakers on the side? WTH is up with the COLORS???

Val, I am so sorry that you have to buy this or risk looking out of place and possibly upsetting the others. Good luck with your decision, and I hope that you and your belly-dancing friends enjoy yourselves.

Okay, that was funny!

I was (as usual) the first one to speak up against the costume, and many other ladies agreed. One lady just had a baby, doesn't feel like showing her stomach, and also doesn't feel like spending that much money, so we're going with a very plain purple/black theme. Fine by me! People can either make it themselves or by something cheap! I'm going to go with plain, except I'm going to get one of those cool coin belts that I can wear to the bars as well!

I hope it all works out for you. It's kind of like being a brides maid, having to wear a dress that you hate, that you know you'll never wear again.
