kinney29 0 #1 November 10, 2004 A lot time as people we can be pretty selfish and most of the stuff we do is to satisfy our own needs. I too fall into that catagory. Recently, I've began volunteering with middle school kids on Friday nights. There's about 250 of them and they are the most fun. I usually spend my Friday's out with friends and having a couple of adult beverages, but the high I get from being around these kids and hopefully having an impact in there lives beats that by far. Anyone else volunteer or do other community service projects? I'm telling ya until you try you won't know how fullfilling it is.
adamjenner 0 #2 November 10, 2004 once the police made me do community service. does 'forced' volunteering count? but now I have volunteered my time for stuff in the past (too many things to remember) but you're right it does feel great when you're done. livendive 8 #3 November 10, 2004 I recruit for and help out household hazardous waste collections a couple times every year. I've also been known to help on search parties when kids go missing. Sheenster303 0 #5 November 10, 2004 I used to do a lot of volunteering when I was in high school. I worked with the Make-a-Wish Foundation quite a bit. I have helped fix up an old battered women's shelter. I painted some houses in downtown Atlanta for people who couldn't afford to pay someone to do it. I carried mulch from one side of a park to another to help beautify it. I've planted a whole bunch of trees in a park. I helped run a carnival for some needy kids in a run-down neighborhood. Wow now that I've written most of it down, it sure does look like I'm a good person. What a crock......I'm so funny I crack my head open! brits17 0 #6 November 10, 2004 Yeah! Every summer (except for this past one) I'm a camp counselor for middle schoolers for 2 weeks. I don't get paid, but I do get to spend time with kids, the beach, and see their lives change drastically! I was inspired because Beach Retreat impacted my life, and its so rewarding to give back. All the preparation before the trip, the studying, the praying, and then to have them be a part of my life following the camp is uber cool. skymama 37 #8 November 10, 2004 I babysit a bunch of misbehaving skydivers on the internet. I did a lot more when my kids were younger at their school and as a Girl Scout leader for 4 years. Now they keep me running around so much with their activities, it doesn't leave a lot of extra time. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

Actually, I do need to start giving of myself more. Volunteering is probably one of the best ways to give of yourself, because you're giving something so precious away, something you'll never get back: your time. Thanks for the inspiration kinney!
