FOR THE FALLEN

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children
England mourns for her dead across the sea,
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again,
They sit no more at familiar tables of home,
They have no lot in our labour of the daytime,
They sleep beyond England’s foam.

But where our desires and hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the night.

As the stars shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are stary in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

I am not sure if it is in the USA (and it is still wednesday) but today is Remembrance day in the UK, Australia and other British territories. This day in 1918 the guns fell silent. For that and all wars we should never forget.

Yes Its called Veterans Day or Flag Day here.

And here we are 86 years later after the War to End All Wars.. and servicepeople are still dieing for their countries in far off places.:(

It is a good thing that so many go to serve while so many are SOOOO busy with their lives to not serve.

Thank you to all those who do serve.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Mike
I love you, Shannon and Jim.

WHEN YOU GO HOME TELL THEM OF US AND SAY, FOR YOUR TOMORROW WE GAVE OUR TODAY

The Soldier

If I should die, think only this is of me:

That there's some corner of a foreign field

That is forever England. There shall be

In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;

A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,

Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,

A body of England's breathing English air,

Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

Lieutenant Rupert Brooke Hood Battalion, Royal Naval Division

Died 23rd April 1915 Aged 27

We are eternally grateful.

Thats an awesome poem - one of my all time favourites.

I hate the way people seem to forget the sacrifices made for us - 2 years ago I saw some kids steal a collection jar from a remembrance day poppy seller. It was just pocket money to them... nothing special about it, just another person to rip off... [:/]

>:(

Thanks to all those who have served, and to those who continue to do so.

It's not English, and it's not about a "just" war... but it is one of my favorite poem/prayers.

If you are able
save for them a place
inside of you
and save one backward glance
when you are leaving
for the places they can
no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say
you loved them
though you may
or may not have always.
Take what they have taught you
with their dying
and keep it with your own.
And in that time
when men decide and feel safe
to call the war insane,
take one gentle moment to embrace
those gentle heros
you left behind.

No sweat and thank you. I didn't have any plans for the next twenty years anyway.
As a veteran I thank everyone from all countries who served, are still serving, and those who never returned helping keep this world bearable. Maybe someday we will be out of a job. Peace
