More belly dancing stuff: my teacher

Recommended Posts

Wildblue took me to a fantastic Moroccan restaurant this past weekend for my birthday, and a beautiful belly dancer performed. I chatted with her for a bit, and I told her I was taking classes. She asked where, and I told her that I took classes with Jasmin Jahal in Chicago. Her reaction: "Oh wow!!! Really? She's my idol! I have all of her videos!"

I just Googled my teacher, and I found all sorts of results! Here's just one: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&q=%22jasmin+jahal%22

I think the best way to relate this is when people from SDC who had Rook as an AFP instructor later realize that he's one of the best in the country. He doesn't wear his accomplishments on his shirt, and he really just wants to teach people. That's how my instructor is. I knew from others that she was quite accomplished, but I had no idea of just how incredible she was. She also has the same passion to teach people to dance and to learn the history of belly dancing. She teaches us of all aspects of stagecraft...make up, costumes, etc.

Yeah...I talk about belly dancing a lot...but it's like starting skydiving all over again! It's all I want to do and talk about! :P

That is so cool Val! Thank you so much for the links. I love reading about bellydancing.

I almost forgot. i wanted to tell you that last week after reading about your costume, I was walking around in Santa Monica and was mysteriously drawn to a store that I had never gone to before. The moment I walked in, I was so drawn to the music. (It's funny because I felt at home...like I was where I should be and the music seemed so right.) I was told that it was bellydancing music. They were out of that particular CD, so I bought another, which is very good, yet not as good as that first one, imo. What CDs/artists do you, your teacher or your bellydance friends recommend as some of the best bellydance music?

I am not going to begin bellydancing right now because I also feel that I would get consumed by it (and I adore dancing), and I have many other things that need to take priority right now. Yet, I would like to begin to listen to this type of music. Perhaps I will eventually look into the dance part at some later time. :)

I completely understand what you mean!!! There's always way too much to do and not enough time to do it!

I also love the music. I have a few cds, but I only have two handy, and I can tell you some of the songs that I really enjoy. I would be more than happy to pick you up a few cds before I come out there, though!

Let's see. Some of the music I've danced to is Shubra by Natacha Atlas (the first song I learned a dance to.) One song that the performer did a dance to that I immediately recognized is the "Kiss Kiss" song called "Simarik." One that I really enjoyed but the dance is much too hard for me to perform is "Inspiration" by Saeed Murad. The songs I'm dancing to in December are "La Azon" and "Nova." I'm not doing the dance, but "Ageeb Ageeb" is a good song to dance to. Ooh! And it comes with the translation: http://www.raqs.co.nz/me/lyrics/ageeb_ageeb.html Actually, I really like "Ageeb Ageeb"!

Lots of music!!! It's all so much fun to dance to! Rosa, you should at least get the coin belt! I just got mine in today!

I'm just wondering what it would take to get all of you to dance for me. And I even promise to be good while the dance is happening!

I like hips.
Seeing a belly dancer puts me in a trance.
What's up with that ?:o

Watching my teacher puts me in a trance!!! I'm still not sure how she moves like that.

And, Rainbo, you can ask Kallend all about it! :P I have my coin belt now, so I'm sure I'll be dancing a whole lot more.

Thats why I love you girl, your saying you'd be easy on me.:)

:P No, I'm being serious! If you are mesmerized by the dance, then you'd probably like dancing it yourself! It's really low impact! It's great exercise!
