Remember the three drink lunch?

Recommended Posts

When I was a kid people used to talk about the "three drink lunch" or the "martini lunch". I wonder how many people still do that. I work with wine and sake so there are always open bottles around but I just couldn't start drinking and then get any work done. (It's not like my boss would mind. He's cool like that).

Anyway I was just wondering how many of you have alcohol with lunch and then go back to work on a normal basis.

Never, well hardly ever. At an old office, we would go to the bar downstairs at 5:00 for a drink and get nothing done afterwards. I need 3 martini lunches precede an afternoon nap!

I used to do that!

Well, I think I did.

OK, I was told I have in the past, but that first word in the subject throws me.

My dad used to do that! I always wondered why he changed jobs so often too!:o For people in his generation (and he's in his late 60s now) it seemed pretty common!

I can't remember the last time I had a beer or glass of wine with lunch and then went back to work! If I tried it now, there is no way I could function!

A lot of people used to drink a lot more than their equivalents do now (except for skydivers and alcoholics :P). Cocktail parties, with lots of cocktails, were de rigueur in the 50's and 60's. My parents' bridge group always had hard liquor out, until the mid-80's when a younger crowd came in, and it tended more towards wine and beer.

That image of the wife meeting her husband with a martini in her had had its basis in reality in some circles...

Wow, that' alcohol devotion there. I only open the freezer for an ice cube. Just enough to chill the scotch, though I'm considering forgoing the ice and just keeping the bottle in the freezer. :D

My grandfather always had whisky with a beer back whenever I saw him. I think my grandma really did meet him at the door with it.

My mom ALWAYS had Bud light (EWWWW) stocked in the fridge and there was always a can going when she got home. That and the bong.

20 years ago it was common in the City of London (financial centre). Not any more, though once or twice a year we used to have a pint (568ml) with our lunch on a Friday.

Now that I'm working in Oz, it's down the pub every Friday for lunch with two schooners (428ml) of beer. I don't actually like it that much, as I can't get any work done for an hour or two afterwards...

I've only gone for a beer with lunch on a workday maybe 4 or 5 times in my life. Not since I started working for my company. They do surprise piss tests once or twice a year for all employees. :|

I still remember the two hour lunch on a Friday on my summer co-op job after my 2nd year in college (I was 20 years old at the time and underage). The whole office (in a municipal dept. no less!) went out to a sports bar/restaurant that had an outdoors area, and my boss (I kid you not) asked me if I wanted a beer. Took me a second to get over the shock and say yes. :P He was cool... I had two beers. This was in Rochester, NY back in about 1988...

On a slightly different topic, I did have 6 beers in the span of 3 hours at home one night during the week and was pretty toasted when I went to sleep. The next morning I had a bit of a hangover and a queazy stomach but had to go to work. Surprise! I get a call that I have to be at the health center for a routine piss test! Ooooo shit.... I don't know how, but I passed... phew!

Oh yeah, he was devoted, all right!:S He'd fill that frosty tumbler with gin, then add a splash of vermouth! I don't even think he bothered with olives! One or two of those, then he'd move on to beer until he fell asleep on the couch! [:/]

I haven't seen him in years so I have no idea if he still drinks like that or not!

When I first came in the Army the regulations allowed two beers with lunch. There were military sponsored clubs all over Ft. Bragg, some with GoGo Dancers (clothed). Riggers from my first unit would go out for lunch, have their two beer limit with their cheeseburger at the club, then go back to work packing parachutes! :S

Shortly after that the regulations changed, and the clubs on post stopped serving alcohol to anyone in uniform until after 1600 hours.

The Clubs? The Green Beret Club, the NCO Club, and the Officers' Club are the only ones left that I know of. The All American Club, Red Beret Club, Dragon Club, Yntema Club, and STRAC Lounge are all closed down.

Just had one of these today. Only Kir and white wine though. Taking 1 1/2 hour to eat helps though...B|
