you have 8 pool balls : OOOOOOOO
they are all the same color, texture, size, everything, accept one weighs just a hair lighter than the rest.

you have 2 balances: _________ _________
^ ^

each balance can only be used once before it self destructs. What is the one sure way to find out 100% which one of the pool balls is lighter?

Take two of the balls, place to one side.

Split the other 6 into two 3's, place on scales. discard the heavier three balls, and the seperate two. Of the 3 remaining balls, seperate one and weight the other two. Find the lighter, or if they are the same the ligher one is the seperate one.

If both sets of three are the same discard all 6, and go back to the two.

Place both of these on the scales, pick the lighter of the two.

I hope this makes sense, i had to think for a minute.

you divide the balls into 3 groups: 3 balls, 3 balls, and 2 balls. you weigh the 3 balls against the other three balls. if it balances, you put them aside and weigh the other 2 against eachother. voila.

if it doesnt balance after the first test, take the balls from the lighter side. take 2 and weigh against eachother. if the heavy one is on the scale, youll know it. if it balances, the third is your ball.

do i win?

Take this equation and move one number to make it true. NOTE: Move is to literally pick up a digit and place it elsewhere. No addition or subtraction allowed.

102-99=1

make it
101-99=2B|

wildblue changed the equation, negating the original question.That's a negatory, good buddy. :P

Brains moved 2 digits. Another NOPE!

How about 101-9=92

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What can you put in a barrel, it CAN be seen by the naked eye, is weightless, colorless, odorless, and tasteless, but if you put it in the barrel it will make it lighter?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Light - as in torch light - can be seen by an eye and will make the barrel lighter!

Nice try, but once again, moved more than one digit. Sorry.

I call shenanigans! I didn't change the equation! I just changed the 'meaning' of the "1" !! I like my idea, I think it was resourceful.

But I have no idea what it is. :D

WAH??? I just moved the 9 from one side to the other...what you talking bout ??

So, you took:
102-99=1 and made it:
101-9=92
and you only moved 1?

Test 3 and 3 set aside 2

if they're equal, test the 2

if they're not equal, take the set that's not equal, and test 1 and 1

Totally lost on those, which is odd for me.

Mine:
Take this equation and move one number to make it true. NOTE: Move is to literally pick up a digit and place it elsewhere. No addition or subtraction allowed.

102-99=1

Move the 2 into the exponent's position of the 10.

move the 2 up a little bit. then you have 10 squared minus ninety nine equals one.

Resourceful, yes. In line with the question, no.

Pick one digit from the eqation. Erase it. Write it back in the equation to make the equation true. How hard can it be? (God, I love cognitive psych >:()

Next Riddle: You have three light switches in one room and three lights in another room. Each switch is connected to one light. You need to find out which switch is connected to which light, but can only go into the other room once.

How do you do that?
