Any Mac gurus that can help with a freakin' AirPort

Recommended Posts

PM me if you want to call me or want me to call you. Here's my situation:

DSL set up at my parent's house. They've had DSL "installed" for months before I came along so I could hook everything up. :S

Anyway, the phone line goes into a Paradyne StormPort 1020, which then feeds to a Linksys 1 port router. The network connection is PPPoE.

I have an AirPort extreme set up and accepting inputs from a PowerBook G4, running all the latest software, etc.

I cannot, for the life of me get the AirPort to take the place of the Linksys, but I know it can be done. Does anyone have any ideas?

PM me and I'll happily call or vice-versa. Thanks.

Here's more detail if anyone understands:

I thought I was having what Apple referred to as a "PPPoE Scenario". I followed the remedy (ensure "auto connect" was not enabled, which it wasn't) to no avail.

Would it be okay to keep the router hooked up? Seems like a bad idea to me (but what the hell do I know)...

So, go from Internet---DSL Line--Stormport--Linksys--Airport ??

I know there is a way to get this working without the Linksys. [:/]

Tell me again why you need the router?

That's what I'm saying , I know I don't need the router. But I am not getting online. I'm missing something in this configuration of the base station and I'm fresh out of ideas. The base station reads that it's "connected" but not via PPPoE. The Internet Connect manager gives me the option to "connect" but it doesn't accomplish the task. I'm now lost.

I know you're all waiting with baited breath about my internet connectivity issues here. :P Well, I've made a little progress and have been able to eliminate the need for a router all together, but I'm still teathered to a pesky cable. I also must connect manually (this is actually okay though)

Now, how to properly allow the AirPort Base Station to connect to the DSL "modem" and maintain the current functionality I've attained. Any input is welcome of course....

*crickets*

I know on the routers I set up with dsl, I had to clone the mac address into the router. Maybe this is what you need to do for the airport?

Solution, BUY A PC! (Someone had to say it! :P)

Also, glad I have cable. Every DSL line I've worked with was a big time PITA.

Thankfully (and not-so) this G4 isn't mine. It's a nice machine though. Apples get a little too smart for their own good I think sometimes. I know if I was on a PC I'd be able to deal.

I'll be back in "windows-land" soon enough. :S

Saw that, no progress. I checked out the discussion boards and there's some conjecture that the firmware in the base station could be a problem, which ticks me off, because I have the latest version (5.5)...phooey...

Seriously, do you have the MAC address of the airport in the Stormport, or is it the net card address of the G4? It really sounds like the Stormport (modem) has the computer's MAC addy, which would be the source of your problem. Did you power everything down, then power up in order? Modem(Stormport)-Router(Airport)-Computer?

There is no way for me to know if the Stormport has my Airport's MAC address. As it is right now, I'm not using the Airport.

I've not done the power-down in order deal yet. Based on the discussions I'm seeing so far, I'll need to power everything down, establish connectivity directly (ethernet), then unplug from the G4 to the AEBS and shoot from there.

If it works, great, but, then if it craps out later my parents will be screwed because they can barely operate the computer (you should've seen my step-mom using the touch-pad on the PowerBook last night...*yikes*)... :P

Bingo.

PPOe uses a single MAC addy (or at least EVERY one I've used. If you clone the addy to the Stormport, all should be well with the world. Sadly, this isn't an Apple problem, it's a dsl problem. (MAC addy for the Airport is on the label on the bottom, BTW).

Every router I've worked with has a place to spoof the MAC address, though I certainly do not envy your position right now.

So, what I would need to do is contact the phone co. and ask them to input my Airport's MAC address into the modem?

I'll check that out tomorrow. Thanks.

shouldn't take that much effort.

Go here:
http://www.paradyne.com/tech_support/tools.html

Scroll down to the "LAN Adapter Configurator", read the Doc, and probably download the program.

Not sure about the newest airport but the older one's are Orinoco RG-1000's OEM'ed for Apple. I had one and never had a problem using it on a PPoE DSL line.
I DID have to input all the connection info into it, USername and password for SBC. In other words, I didn't use SBC's software after I installed the base station, it took care of connecting and as far as my pc was concerned, it was on any ole network.
