Stacy 0 #1 November 22, 2004 I just saw on Fox news (Tampa Bay) that a Cessna started itself and caused quite a ruckus at ZHills today. I can't find news reports on line anywhere and I'm wondering if any dmage was done to teh DZ Otters or facilities. All I saw on the news was that the plane damaged a few other 182s and was halted when it ran into a hangar. Any info?
quade 4 #2 November 22, 2004 I can think of a couple of ways it might have started unexpectedly, but I can't think of a single way it could have started by itself.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
marcandalysse 0 #3 November 22, 2004 So that's what happened! The sunset load was in the air when the airport closed the airspace, so the plane couldn't complete jumprun, and had to land at Vandenberg airport, about 30 minutes away by car. Cars were sent out to pick everyone up....and they returned after dark! marc
Kramer 0 #4 November 22, 2004 Wow! That's quite the story. So do Cessna's start themselves a lot? Where did it plan on flying to? Did it fill out a flight plan? Was anyone hurt? The FAKE KRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMER!!!!!!!!!
larsrulz 0 #5 November 22, 2004 There is an ever so slight chance that if you were to improperly shutdown a general aviation aircraft (never heard of this before, but it is possible) that bumping the prop could cause fuel that is currently in the cylinder to fire, but this would require the pilot to have left the mags on and improperly shut down the aircraft. Those with more practical pilot experience will probably have a better answer than this though. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
dixieskydiver 0 #6 November 22, 2004 Dude, what are you talking about? The only plausible explanation is that the plane is possessed. Dixie HISPA #56 Facil Rodriguez "Scientific research has shown that 60% of the time, it works every time."

Well, you could also have a short in the mag wire...A hot jug could pop if the prop moves. I have seen it before. Didn't start the engine, but it backfired about 30 seconds after the engine stopped. Now this case was a guy had stopped and fueled his plane (A Cessna 172 I think). His battery was dead, so he hand propped it. The problem was that he had to much throttle, and the plane started and started rolling. The pilot is 61 and tried to get into the plane to stop it, but could not. He was fine, but it totalled two airplanes, went through two fences and hit a hanger."No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers,
