vt1977 0 #26 November 19, 2004 Smoking is a disgusting, smelly habit and people who smoke around non-smokers or around gear are selfish in the extreme. Ugggghhhhh! Vicki
sunshine 2 #27 November 19, 2004 QuoteYou cannot smoke in the bar there. It's so nice to hang out at the end of the day in the awesome bar and be able to breathe. --------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, I love that about Deland too! I wish Eloy would impliment that policy. Me too. It was so miserable last year at eloy. Either go outside and freeze, or be in the smoky bar and not breathe. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! Snowbird 0 #28 November 19, 2004 QuotePart of what i love about SDC, is the no smoking policy Okay, that's a dz I'd like! Deland too. Most of the jumpers here smoke. In fact, on the rare days when it's mostly us non-smokers, we do a little cheer. There's strict taboo on smoking near the packing mat and in the classroom, but anywhere else seems to be okay. Yuck! So many of our jumpers smoke that when we hit the local pub - where you can't smoke inside - we usually end up on the patio so they can have their cancer sticks. What blows my mind is how can they afford it? Skydiving costs enough as it is! I don't have sympathy for them when they want to jump but 'can't afford to jump today', and go buy smokes. Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. -Robert A. Heinlein
Granimal 0 #29 November 19, 2004 I would rather be exposed to smoking (away from my gear), then watch have someone chew tobacco in front of me while they spit big globs of brown mucus into a clear spitter. I have witnessed catastrophic spills of that nasty shit. What makes it even worse is when they try to talk to me at close range and I am assaulted by their pungent nasty breath. SkydiveNFlorida 0 #35 November 19, 2004 QuoteI smoke. I also stay downwind of non-smokers and away from gear. Good man! --- non-smoker here. Although I did smoke occassionally when I got into the sport, I ended up quitting because I met a great guy who I didn't want to pollute. I already had reasons for quitting before then, though, it was just the final reason. After several months I went out and had a smoke, it was awful! Cigarettes taste icky. -A
nerd137 0 #36 November 19, 2004 Personally, I kinda enjoy it when people smoke at my DZ. (Or anywhere else I might be.) I used to smoke like 30 cigarettes a day, but quit about 2 years ago. But I still think about smoking alllllllll the time. When I see/smell cigarette smoke, it's like seeing a beautifal, long lost ex-girlfriend who I still feel a deep love for, but know it's better that we're apart because the relationship was too dysfunctional. (D E E P S I G H) However, I still allow myself "one night stands" under certain circumstances: (1) When I'm in Vegas, (2) when I'm out of the country, and (3) If someone I know dies. I also tell myself if I ever sleep with a supermodel, I'll celebrate with a smoke. Or if I have to go to prision, I might as well start again. And if I live to 85, fuck it, I'm starting for sure! Um, yeah, I think that's all. Anyway, most of the time, I can carry on just fine with only my occational brushes with second-hand smoke. Mmmmmm! Nightingale 0 #37 November 19, 2004 I agree with you. As a non-smoker, I have absolutely no problem with people smoking, so long as I don't have to: 1. breathe it. 2. look at cig butts scattered all over 3. have my stuff smell like smoke or be damaged from burning cigs. I don't usually walk up to someone smoking, but if I do, I'll just stand upwind, and wouldn't be rude and ask them to put it out. they were there first. On the other hand, if the guy sitting next to me in a hockey game lights up, you bet I'm going to say something, because I paid for my seat, and the arena is non-smoking. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do about my upstairs neighbors...they sit on the steps in front of their apartment, which go right above my front door, and smoke. I have no problem with this... what really bugs is that when they're done with their cigarette, they toss the butt down right in front of my door. I'm getting sick of picking up their trash! I've politely asked them to use an ashtray, and they were apologetic and said they would, but next day, there's cigarette butts all over my front door mat again. sigh... Ya know I did that a couple weeks ago and I found out that I really just do not like cigarettes. I figured they would be better if I was drunk. Nope.....they are still disgusting either way. I can handle people smoking around me. Very rarely does the smoke bother me. I would rather not have people smoking near me while I'm eating, but who wants smoke all over their food?I'm so funny I crack my head open! Peej 0 #39 November 20, 2004 t, I agree completely with Nac and Aggie Dave, i try to conduct myself in the same manner and i'd like to think that i'm a considerate smoker. FWIW, I like the way Perris and a few other DZ's have a no smoking in the bar policy, if you wanna smoke, smoke outside, i do. Our DZ should be the same and you have my support if you need it. Besides, how long does it take to smoke a ciggarette? 5 minutes? I'm sure us smokers can deal with our winter cold for a whole 5 minutes. bob.dino 1 #40 November 20, 2004 No smoking here. I've no problem with other folks smoking, as long as a) it's away from my gear, and b) I'm not eating. Pretty much everyone is considerate enough for these not to be issues, so as far as I'm concerned, it's all good.
peacefuljeffrey 0 #41 November 20, 2004 QuoteSo. I'm a non smoker. While at the DZ I've had a hole burned in a canopy. ("Oh. Sorry.") and I've been burned by a cigarette. (Ooops! Sorry.") Dude, I really think that if the latter happened to me, I'd treat it as an assault; and if the former happened to my canopy -- particularly if all I got was, "Oh. Sorry." -- there'd be one smoker with a swollen face at the DZ, and I'd have something of his/hers of equivalent value before I left for home that day, or a fistful of cash as compensation. No fuckin' way would I not take cigarette damage to me or my gear extremely seriously. Cigarettes have no business being anywhere near parachutes. -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" peacefuljeffrey 0 #42 November 20, 2004 Quotegrr...you just hit on something that irratates me. I had somene burn a hole through a brand new pilot chute. Obviously, I'm a non smoker This maybe should be a new poll altogether, but If you had gear ruined by a smoker's cigarette, and you knew who was responsible for the damage, WERE YOU COMPENSATED FOR YOUR LOSS? -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... bob.dino 1 #43 November 20, 2004 QuoteDude, I really think that if the latter happened to me, I'd treat it as an assault Don't you think that treating an accidental burn as assault is overkill? peacefuljeffrey 0 #44 November 20, 2004 QuoteDon't you think that treating an accidental burn as assault is overkill? Do you punch out people that spill their drink on you? Actually, it's over a decade since I punched out anyone. My comments were pretty much hyperbole intended to convey that I'd be extremely angry if a smoker's carelessness harmed me or my gear. I'm not one of these folks with two containers and three mains -- if someone burns my canopy, I'm not jumping for a while, and that'd piss me right the fuck off. I suppose I'd start off with a polite demand for monetary compensation for the damage. If that failed, things would probably escalate. If you fuck up someone's stuff with your cigarette, ya better man-up and make good. That's all there is to it. -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... bob.dino 1 #45 November 20, 2004 I was referring to the someone accidentally burning you, rather than your gear. And, yeah, I recognised that you were being hyperbolic. If I damaged someones stuff with my cigarette, I would certainly ask what I could do and bring it immediately to the rigger so he could fix the problem. But I would not give cash. And I would also invite the person for a couple of beers/other drinks. Taking good care of what I do when I smoke, and usually when I finish 1 cigarette at the DZ, I pick up about 10 cigarette butts to throw them in the trash. Smokers too try to keep the place clean. But I'll be quitting (again) in a very short time. cocheese 0 #47 November 20, 2004 Poll Smoker ? NO!Skydiver ? YES!Do this : You are at a red light or drive thru ( cars stopped) And someone throws a cig out the window. Pick it up and throw it back in their car (still lit of course) I usually go for the passenger side floor with it for various reasons.Oh Don't forget get to say "Um Excuse me sir /ma'am, you dropped this".Only do this when you feel bullet proof like after a good day of skydiving.I've always been amazed at how close smokers get to gasoline etc, while smoking.Must be the lack of oxygen to the brain. Even a stoned pot smoker would know better.

It just gives you a run down & slightly wired kinda feeling. And it tastes & smells bad. I just cannot understand why people think its so great that they would want to celebrate with it. Or pine away over it after they quit. Cigarettes just don't taste good or make me feel good. I just don't understand the attraction at all.
