Why the holidays SUCK . . .

Recommended Posts

In contrast to Lisa's very sweet post about what she's thankful for, here's my top 5 list on why the holidays suck (for me, anyway). :D

5). It's cold in most parts of the Northern Hemisphere, so skydiving is becomes "dodge the ice crystals". :(
4). You get lots of presents you don't want, and you have to buy presents for people you don't want to spend money on. :P
3). Christmas trees burn houses down on occasion.
2). Everybody goes away, and I'm stuck at home alone, watching Bridget Jones and drinking spiked egg nog until I pass out in my pajama pants with snowmen on them. :D

And the number one reason the holidays suck is . . .

1). Being alone during the holidays is like an iron glove smacking you in the face over and over again. :( Oh, well.

Go ahead-- call me Scrooge. Bah humbug! ;)

I was alone for the first 22 holidays of my life! :D I don't see a real advantage to having someone for the holidays. I guess the only advantage would be if your lucky and your families live close, that just means double the food! That would be great!

This one I wanna smack you for....:P

Be glad you have people who care enough to do anything for you.....sometimes it may not be what you thought or what you wanted...but they still took the time and effort to do something for you.

More people then you realized dont have families that buy them gifts...or even friends for that matter.

I understand the whole thing about being alone for the holidays...however truely being alone is sitting in your apartment by yourself with no one I mean no one there. I agree that having a SO for the holidays would be great, but the true holiday spirit is to be with your family and loved ones...if you have them Cherish them...as they one day will be gone. :|

My main reason why the holidays suck is that I almost never get a chance to go out and jump between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. It's just too hectic, and when I do have an open weekend, the weather sucks... [:/]

Also, trying to juggle spending the holidays between three different set of families - mine and two sets of in-laws (wife's parents are divorced), ain't much fun at all.

Give me a holiday at home with my wife in front of a roaring fireplace and a heavily spiked eggnog (with Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum), and I'm happy! ;)

But I enjoy having someone to share the holiday with, even if it's just a best friend. All of my friends are taken or will be out of town, though, unfortunately.

Ahhh....that does kinda stink!!! I like getting drunk with my friends with all of our family's alcohol combined!!! :D

Ok, but I still stand by my point. The holiday has become SO COMMERCIALIZED, that it's all about spending as much as you can and getting as many presents as possible. I hate the whole "secret Santa" bullshit, because like I really need to spend money on someone I don't know. And I'm just gonna end up with some monogrammed pen that I'll throw away. It's a waste of money. I buy presents for people important to me, and that's it. I wish everyone else would follow suit.

Im not going to argue the whole commercialized thing, because that I agree with.

You just have to remember....that there are people that would do anything to get that crap present you didnt want, as they get nothing. They have no family.

I couldn't aagree with you more about the holidays being commercialized to death. In our family, we make the holidays as low key as we want them to be. We've let, or tried to let, the extended families that we expect no gifts from them and to not expect gifts from us. We put up lights, chop down a tree, and decorate it all together. We have holiday traditions we like to do, but nothing that we have to do. Come Christmas morning, yes, the kids are chomping at the bit to unwrap everything, but even then, we go slow and unwrap on gift at a time, while the rest watch, starting with the youngest child. Yes, I go last every year. It's really quite a nice way to do it.

I refuse to let American retailers make me feel guilty because I don't go into debt spending a zillion dollars every Christmas. That's not what family and love a really about.B|

Another reason holidays suck that you forgot to mention....THE BARS ARE ALL CLOSED!!

They are not all closed.. my brother gets me drunk every christmas eve... (after church of course..) Its tradition. Cant tell you how much fun it is to wake up Christmas morning on your grandmother's bathroom floor. :S
I'm kidding... that only happened once.

Been there, done that, didn't make the day seem any better or worse. It was just another day....but at home alone was alot less stress.

You get a bit jaded about the holidays when time after time after time the most important people in your life ruin that day/season for you.

I am up for the drinking part, however.

I buy gifts for 2 people and get gifts from 2. I tell everyone else to buy themselves something from me, and I'll do the same.

That's why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. No expectations, no pressure, no ulterior motives other than to get together and feast.

Does your home dz do a holiday party? If not, come on down to FL! I don't know about the rest of the dz's, but I know Deland puts on a big shin-dig with lots of food and the jump planes are busy.

Yep. I think it just emphasizes the fact that your pissed off at being alone in the first place. So much lovy dovy on TV / Ads / Stores or whatever to remind you that your single and unhappy about it. (And no its not idle bitching on my part. I'm looking, just haven't found a girl I want to be dating and wants to date me. Its almost always one or the other B|)

p.s. Seeking a girl that cares about me. Anyone know any? [:/]
