hummerMAN 0 #1 November 24, 2004 After reading on a couple web sites, I find a couple posts that more or less say they would copy any videos so their friends don't have to buy the video. Now we all know this is wrong, but some of us Pirating Skydiving/Base Videos anyway. Will you/ and or have you? -------------------- Dave aka hummerMAN --------------------
MikeJD 0 #2 November 24, 2004 Just because it's easy to do doesn't make it right. Commercial skydiving and BASE videos and DVDs are expensive, like most purchases in those sports, because the market is small. I see making free copies for other people as taking a bite out of someone's livelihood, and making a mockery of the time, talent and investment that goes into their work. Plus, it reduces the market size further and so arguably bumps up the prices even more for the legitimate buyers. It's an unfashionable opinion, but I feel pretty much the same way about any copyrighted work - although most strongly about the 'little guy' who's producing skydiving movies and likely operating with fairly low margins to begin with - and, let's not forget, who isn't a faceless fat cat record company exec but a fellow skydiver or BASE jumper! For the record, I don't make skydiving movies and don't have any axe to grind! And I don't normally rant like this... BUT i'd rather buy the actual copy. Well what do you think will happen if everyone starts ripping off those games/CDs/movies you like so much? If the designers aren't making any money at it, they can't continue to make that stuff you enjoy so much. Just fork over the money. Full length feature films that cost MILLIONS of dollars to make are cheaper to buy in DVD format than almost every skydiving movie out there. Just to give you an idea, the best selling DVD right now is a Harry Pooter flick and is only 20 bucks. For that, why dont you go get yourself a copy of Breakaway or GroundRush instead? No? Oh comeon!! I bought Good Stuff and it was worth every stinkin penny. It was long, and very entertaing. I reccomend it to every skydiver to have in his/her collection. Conversely, I have Out of the Blue, and feel that I got totally jacked out of my 50 bucks for a flick that is merely 30 minutes long. I was so disappointed that I tried to get my cash back.......no luck. As with everything, lower the price to a reasonable level, the problem will for the most part go away. By the way, cheap is relative to each person. Agreed that there are some skydiving movies that cost a lot of money for not much content - and I won't buy them (ok, I have bought them, but only after agonising about it ). But the thing about blockbuster Hollywood movies is that the millions they cost to make - unless the film really bombed - has already been recouped at the cinema box office. Now all the producers of the DVD have to do is throw in a couple of crappy HBO 'making of' documentaries, add a director's commentary, produce a HUGE run of disks (thus keeping the cost down), sit back and watch the money roll in. And then in a couple of months release the 'special edition' and watch the money roll in again . I think it's safe to say that Warner Bros are making a lot more profit from Harry Potter than anyone will ever make from 'Out of the Blue'.
