Calling all Stephen King Dark Tower series readers!

I didn't have any problem getting a first edition copy of the last one without preordering or waiting in a long line, so I'm just taking my chances again this time!

Even the last Harry Potter book (which I did pre-order) was available pretty much everywhere!

I don't care about first editions although I have a lot of them. I'm just anxious to read it. Heck I've been reading the Dark Tower series for over 15 years now and I want to know how it ends!

SK lost me when he turned a perfectly wonderful tragedy into a perfectly crappy happily-ever-after fairy tale...

Eyes of the Dragon was the last thing i finished by him, i've tried a few others since but they've all seem so hackneyed i couldnt finish...

I've read almost all of his novels, and the only one I really disliked (but eventually finished) was Gerald's Game. That one to me was gratuitously (is that even a word?:P) creepy and gross! About the only character I identified with was the stray dog!

I do love the DT series, but I can sense the end is near and maybe he's rushed these last few just to finish! (but then we bitch when we have to wait 5 years between installments too!)

His work may never be considered great classic literature and he may never go down in history as a GREAT writer, but he writes compelling characters and tells good stories. (And LOTS of them!)

Yeah, I'm with you on that. Some of the volumes are definitely better than others. I'm sure everyone has their particular parts of the story they don't agree with; I for one would personally LOVE to see Roland shoot Oy out of a potato-gun. But, for the most part, it's been a good read.

Funny thing... in one of the earlier volumes (2 or 3 I think) he mentions in an afterword that, if he were to finish the series and the pace he expected to finish it that he would wrap it up sometime around 2005. I sat there reading that way back when and thought "damn, I'll be thirty by then!?" and tried to imagine myself as a thirty year old. The thought of being thirty was totally beyond my late-teen mentality to grasp. And here we are, right on schedule...

I picked up the book at Sam's Club today at a great price. I don't know when I'm going to have time to read it, as I'm taking 3 classes and working "part-time," which right now has been basically full-time.

But, I don't know how anxious I am to read it right away anyway. Am I the only one who is a bit sad that it's about to be all over? I normally read books rather quickly, but I'm thinking I'll savor this one...make it last as long as I can. I don't want to say goodbye to them. [:/] I know that I'll always be able to go back and read the books again, and I probably will, but it's not going to be the same. Their time has come and now it's gone, and I just think it's sad!

Bought it yesterday. I'm going to take my time and really enjoy it. So far it's pretty good.

Well, I just finished it. Perfect day for it with Jeane dumping what's left of her fury on my little part of the Keystone World.

I'm really happy with the way things ended. The scope of the DT project was incredible and I was worried because I felt like King was getting off the track in a couple of the previous volumes in particular, but here in this last installment he seemed (in my opinon) to find a flavor of the first book and really bring the story full circle.

Without a doubt, I would rank this final installment as my second-favorite in the series, after the impossible-to-beat Part I.

Some may not like the way the book (and series) ends, but I'm really pleased with it. In the end, it holds true to the feeling I got from the first time I read the first volume.

Well I hafta say that after avidly reading all STs books for years I'm about ready to give up on him. I thought the first two in the dark tower series were fantastic. Pretty much everything thereafter lacked the depth, complexity, and believability many of his other books had. Without ruining it for those who haven't read them, I thought his "foils" for what happens were totally cop-outs! I never thought he was exactly a challenging read, but these (and some of his other later books)are too pedestrian. Anyone else dissapointed?

Yup. King should have taken his time and made each one of the books worthy of the epic. But instead he just started cranking them out towards the end and the quality totally suffered. After The Wastelands they went downhill in a hurry, and I am totally disappointed in the series in the end. [:/]
