I mean, they spent millions on that engine; why not use it to actually, you know, let you see stuff? You are right, I agree, but like I mentioned on a previous post on this thread, they want you to "use" the "new" features of the engine (in the case of D3, the famous flashlight), it's lame, I know. But, in my opinion D3 is more interesting that HL2 in terms of action.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. flyingferret 0 #27 November 19, 2004 Yeah, this has been a huge point of feedback for the game. It reality based on interviews, it was dones specifically to provide atmosphere; the frantic weapon/flashlight shock mix. If you really dont like it, get the 'ducttape' mod. It mounts the flash light to your weapon and allows concurrent use. Personally I think the dark might heard an exploratory game like Myst, but for a game I bought specifically to scare me, it works very well. But once again, to each his own. The original Half Life and Doom were different, exploration vs. strafing. The sequels still are.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. I'm not sure that the airboat sequence needed to be as long, but at least they mixed it up with some puzzles. I'm still getting used to the gravity gun. Currently I just got passed the part with the russian "father" chaaracter and I am staring down the hole into the mine....had to stop there and go to bed last night. I tried CS:Source and was bored after five minutes. I've never been a big fan of CS anyhow. I'll have to try the new HL1 Source version in multiplayer tonight to see if I like it. I'm having issues running this game on my roommates computer - I cannot get it above 800*600 and had to turn down the texture detail to medium. I'm thinking it has to be his video card...I thought he had his x800 already but he is still on his TI4600 with an AMD 64FX and an Audigy 2._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I mean fighting off cops with a pistol and crowbar can be fun...but NOTHING beats blowing the heads off zombies and monsters....or beating them to death with your flashlight. billvon 3,116 #32 November 19, 2004 >The original Half Life and Doom were different, exploration vs. strafing. > The sequels still are. I thought the original Doom took a lot more strategy; where you had to be when you threw the first grenade, how well you could dodge, how you could time door closings and whatnot. This one seems to be just shooting at things. Maybe I'm not into it far enough - the thing bombs on me after about an hour, so it's hard to get very far. Every single black pixel was individually hand drawn![/sarcasm] I have the same complaint about Doom...the "it's dark so it must be creepy" thing got tiring real fast. Playing Half-Lilfe 2 over the last couple of days has been a nicely refreshing experience after D3.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
flyingferret 0 #34 November 19, 2004 The crash thing there is a fix for, actually maybe a few based on your symptoms. I see your point. But a lot of the reason for that in the first games, was static object tracking. Everything was on a fixed path and loop. So it made a great deal of difference. With newer engines, you might have 100 ways to get to the same point. Do they all provide the same features is a question I don't think anyone has answered for doom.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. CrazyIvan 0 #35 November 21, 2004 Well...finished the game, and..... what a boring ending. I think they should change the name from "Half Life" to "Half Price", because the way it is, it's really a ripoff. __________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. I'm at the buggy as well, just got past the crane. So far there has been a surprising lack of bad guys. It feels like I am just walking thru the levels without any fear of not having enough ammo, etc. There needs to be more bad guys!!! I didn't even see a way to increase the difficulty level._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... I think they should change the name from "Half Life" to "Half Price", because the way it is, it's really a ripoff. Yeah, I finished the game last night too. Well this morning around 3. It wasn't a bad ending, but it could have been more exciting. All together I thought the game was pretty easy on normal mode. The hardest parts were after you had to destroy the first generator while protecting Alyx. I swear I died like 100 times trying to get her slow ass through the gate. And then after that, it was pretty difficult with the stryders and everything else that followed that. IF they make another HL, they should make the difficulty like the last 2 hours of playing - now that was fun.. But still, this game has my vote for Game Of The Year 2004. Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! Beavis: Yeah! Yeah! Cool! bellyflier on the dz.com hybrid record jump

IF they make another HL, they should make the difficulty like the last 2 hours of playing - now that was fun.. Up until the buggy part ended I kept wondering when the game was really going to start. I liked the pace right at the beginning when you were on the run from the combine, but after a while it wore a bit thin.....esp when after quite a few hours of this there was almost no story advancement. I felt that it didn't do anything to answer any questions from the end of the first one while only adding more questions that needed to be answered by the end of this game (like what Breen was talking about to that creature). The only reason I am not upset with the ending is because I think of it like a movie where the sequel only pushes the story along but leaves the resolution for the next movie. I just wonder if we will need to wait another six years before the next game comes out? The way I figure it, it will take them 6-8 months to port it over to the consoles, take some time getting out some much needed bug fixes (I had two Alyx's following me around in Nova Prospect for a while) before they even start doing any real work on part three. Here is a thought - bring back the AI from the first game. The opposing forces in HL, Blue Shift and Opposing Force was much better than the fodder in this game. It's espically annoying when the troops following you clog up the hallways and get in your way. The best part of the game: The attack on Nova Prospect....the unique approach with the bugbait combined with one of the best level designs I have ever seen with the prison made for a great combination. The part where wave after wave of troops keep coming at you with the sentry guns was the hardest part of the game (even with brining another sentry gun with me from the room Alyx was in). The jump puzzles were a bit annoying after a while, esp when you get the same puzzle in a few variations. The weapon change inside the Citidel was fun! I wish we had that weapon during the entire game. It did make it feel like Gordon was pissed off with how distructive it could be. Can you imagine using that in a multiplayer setting??? Now I need to find a new game to play._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
