Bolas 5 #1 November 30, 2004 Kinda long rant I live in North Carolina, my home DZ is in South Carolina. I have an RV van that I was driving back and forth but with the cost of gas and winter coming I decided to leave it at the DZ. I called my insurance company, Geico. I told them the van will stay in South Carolina. I don't give Insurance companies any reason to weasel out of a claim stating something like, "Well, you didn't tell us it stayed here so that tree through the middle is not covered." Give them the location and then they tell me I need a South Carolina Policy to cover this. I tell them do it (without getting a quote, I know big mistake ). A week later I then get two bills, one removing the van from the North Carolina Policy and crediting me like $120 and a bill for the SC policy for $650 FOR SIX DAMN MONTHS!!! A week later I go get the van and change it back. I then start shopping around for better coverage. I get a quote from Progressive that is a little higher in North Carolina, but they will only charge me about $500 FOR THE YEAR!!! Nope, enter the state of North Carolina DMV. They want to charge me $50 for an uninsured vehicle and surrender my plates. I sent them proof of insurance from both companies 3 different times before I got that straight (I think). I never did get a straight answer from either the insurance company or the DMV if having insurance for one state where the vehicle lives and having it registered in another state where I live is kosher. Today I've been dealing with Progressive, they wanted proof of prior insurance about a week or so ago. Fine, I call them and fax them the info twice in a two week period. Find out today that they lowered my liability because I didn't fill out some form. I was told it was an umbrella policy form, which I don't have. The first lady proceeded to tell me they could not offer the higher liability, I had to get an umbrella policy, even though Geico did it and I had it on the van in South Carolina. At this point I thought I was gonna have to change companies back, at least for my car. I called the South Carolina insurance people and asked if I could get the same limits in North Carolina on the RV without an umbrella policy. They said no problem so I asked why I couldn't on the car. I finally had someone explain to me what that form was. It's being faxed to me for me to sign and return. Once I do that (hopefully) I'll be able to get everything straight. End of rant Anybody else have similar experiences? Not accidents, but just paperwork hassles and confusion?Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. nate_1979 9 #4 November 30, 2004 As far as insurance and registration in two different states, you are "Legal" if you have 2 of the following things in the same state: I found this out when I had Washington plates, California insurance, and a South Dakota license (for a very short time) :) Your Drivers License Your Insurance Your Registration I found this out when I had Washington plates, California insurance, and a South Dakota license (for a very short time) :) FGF #??? Bolas 5 #5 November 30, 2004 Yeah, I had them before when I was in Virginia. Only people who'd insure me when I had a few tickets, an improper driving, a minor accident and a brand new 1997 Toyota Camry V6 for the bargain price of $2700. I switched to Geico when I got my new truck. They never did like the RV van though. Called it a customized van and listed all the stuff on it. I thought about keeping them for the car, and going Progressive for the RV, but decided it would be easier to deal with one company. kai2k1 0 #6 November 30, 2004 IMHO Both companies suck. in 1994 I had an accident whilie i was insured through GEICO. Came home on leave from DC and had an accident. Sure the payment was late, I called them prior to it and they said NP just send it in the mail. The next day I go out and wreck my truck (I rear-ended an F250 and pushed him off of a steep ravine) GEICO doesnt cover the accident and told me that I was without insurance for that day only. Then they decide to drop me and send me a refund check for the balance of my policy. About 2 months later I get a bill in the mail from them telling me that I owe them X amount of dollars for coverage they had been providing me since under MD Law they had to provide me with insurance!! I was like WTF?? you drop me, send me a refund, then send me a bill?? what fuckin kind of company are you??? Long story short I got sued for 75k and was forced to file bankruptcy on the whole damn thing. Right after I got married, my other insurance company dropped me after having too many speeding tickets and I was forced to go with progressive. They raped me for 275 a month on a 6 month policy since i was high risk on a 1995 Mustang GT convertible. I'm with state farm now and pay roughly about 700 a year in premiums. tigra 0 #8 December 1, 2004 I had Geico for a long time and I assumed they were the cheapest. I paid a lot of money for full coverage on a new car in the city not kept in a garage. I figured that was the best I could get because when I first moved into the city, it was! Soooo, when I bought my house in a suburb with a garage, I called them looking for a quote for homeowners and an updated quote for the car insurance figuring my premium would be cut in half! WRONG! They told me it would be about the same, leaving the city didn't matter and having a garage didn't matter either! They said the only way for my premium to go down was to get married! Hello? They were charging me more because I'm single? (with good credit and a perfect driving record and only one claim from years back when my parked car was the victim of a hit and run) Someone HAS to explain that to me! The homeowners quote they gave me was outrageous too, and I ended up with Allstate for both at less than half what Geico quoted me. Who knew? Way back when I moved into the city, Geico was the only company I could afford! So, the lesson for the day is, Shop Around! I really didn't have too many complaints with Geico up until then! Kbone 0 #9 December 1, 2004 Geico is not the cheapest. All those ads they run on TV don't pay for themselves.
AggieDave 6 #10 December 1, 2004 USAA is pretty expensive too...BUT they've been incredible each time I've had to call them (I've had to call a couple times). Hell, they even were happy to pay for the $300 winching out of the mud by the Brazos river a couple of years ago (long, but funny story...involved a large truck, 33" mud tires, 2-weeks of rain and not being able to open the doors on the truck).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." wingnut 0 #11 December 1, 2004 damn dude.... farmers charges me like 20 bucks a month for coverage on my rv...(class c dodge) and when i switch insurance cariers it is gonago way down and then add the fact i'm moving to ohio and it will go down even more... think the new rate i was quoted in ohio was like 100 a year.... i'd tell ya to go with USAA for insurance but that's only open to military..... you don't have mom or dad or spouce int he military do ya?? if so you would qualify for membership... ______________________________________ "i have no reader's digest version"
Vallerina 2 #12 December 1, 2004 QuoteGeico is not the cheapest. All those ads they run on TV don't pay for themselves. Actually, many times Geico is the cheapest because they have the lowest overhead of most of the big name insurance companies. Progressive is many times the cheapest because (imho) they are the most adequately rated of the insurance companies out there. My advice to everyone, check out your state's DOI homepage. Most require every single insurance company to rate 10 or so examples they give Find the example you match the closest to, and make sure to check out the companies where you are the cheapest. Many states require us to do it once a year or so, so while rate changes affect them, it's a good starting point. As a customer of State Farm, they've always been great for us.There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
nate_1979 9 #13 December 1, 2004 QuoteUSAA is pretty expensive too...BUT they've been incredible each time I've had to call them (I've had to call a couple times). Expensive? I have saved a FORTUNE with USAA compared to other insurance companies, .. I have also checked recently just to see if I was still getting better rates, and I could not find anything better (not that I would switch if I could)... And like you said, they treat you very well. I pay a little less than $100 per month for full coverage + renters insurance, not to mention that they have lowered my rates every six months plus they send those refund checks out once a year (or did, heard they stopped), they just rock.. I Recomend them to anyone who can use their services (there are pre req's for joining) FGF #??? I miss the sky... TequilaGirl 0 #14 December 1, 2004 I have my homeowners with USAA but they wanted $500 bucks more a year than Farmer's did for my car insurance policy.....
tigra 0 #15 December 1, 2004 I was actually surprised that a big name insurance company was sooooo much less expensive than Geico. And now I even have an agent I can call and talk to! A real person, not just a rep at the other end of an 800 number. (But to be fair, I never had a problem with the service I got from Geico.)
