Have you gotten rid of your land phone line?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to join the 21st century and get a cell phone. Leaning towards Cingular.

But now I'm thinking, I could switch from a dial-up modem on my computer to a cable plan, and get rid of my land phone line entirely.

have you done this, & had any problems?

(by the way: my stepfather has spent a lot of time in Kenya. He says that since many parts of Africa don't have telephone lines, Africans are mostly just skipping the land phone line step & going straight to cell phones.)

I've thought about it, but I rely on the phone to go to work. If for some reason I don't get a signal in the house or forget to recharge my cell I could easily miss a call for work. Once I retire (in 30 freakin years) the first thing I'm gonna do is rip the phone out of the wall. No more late nite calls for me :)

I got rid of the phone line two years ago; telemarketers were the only ones that called me on it anyway. I love my cable modem!!! The only downside is the reception of some cell providers sucks in my current place and after the hurricane, service was down for a day or so. So, 9-1-1 was missing.

I first got a land line because I wanted a credit card. As of two years ago, credit card applications would be denied without a valid land telephone number.

We kept the land line because of DSL.

We're moving shortly, and will likely ditch the land-line when we switch to Cable-Internet.

could possibly have been missing for the land phone line users as well.

I'm leaning toward cingular for my cell plan. They just merged with AT&T wireless, and they appear to have good coverage according to the map. and the minutes rollover from month to month, plus I can call anyone else who has either AT&T or Cingular for unlimited minutes nationwide. seems like a pretty good deal for $39.95/month.

I haven't had a cell phone before, but everytime a relative or friend comes visiting I run into problems hooking up with them & making plans, etc. because I don't have a cell phone.

Maybe, maybe not. The land line system is very robust, especially if the lines are run underground. It has its own power system and can work in many situations. There have been reports and stories of entire homes being ripped away by a tornado, but the single phone that survied and was plugged in still worked.

How many minutes? What time do nights start?
They add up quick!! IMHO 500 anytime + 7pm nights is a minimum to replace your home phone, more if you have to talk to a g/f or spouse frequently.

nights start at 9 pm. I would get 5000 night/weekend minutes.
450 "anytime" minutes that can rollover.

I could pay an extra 7$/month to get the nights to start at 7PM though. But I don't know if that's necessary for me. I don't talk on the phone much.

hmmm. that might be a problem. it would suck if I signed up for a year-long contract just to have it not work in my house.>:(

my house gets bad radio & TV reception, so I wonder what will happen....:o:|

I've been off and on with land lines. San Antonio had good phone service and never did have my phone go out. With my cell it goes out now and then and sometimes people can't even call (It wont even roll to voicemail!) I had the best luck in the TX boondocks with Nextel, but up in the Northeast it seems like Verizon has the best coverage.

I was surprised to not drop a call while I was driving through the Holland tunnel a few weeks ago, but as soon as I emerged in Chinatown it went kaput. Oh well. :P

i didn't have a land line for about a year but then I got it again a few months ago because I wanted to get DSL and got it through my phone company. I also thought it might be nice to get it again because sometimes I get tired of holding the cell phone to my head as its not as comfortable as my landline phone. Plus I tend to forget to charge my cell phone.

However I have to say that I may soon change to cable for my computer and my phone and eliminate my phone service as I am spending too much unnecessarily. What is the typical cost if have it all through the cable company?? Do folks like it??

We ditched the land line some time ago, but then quickly realized it was needed, especially with more than one person, a single cell didn't cut it, BUT, we didn't go crawling back to SBC. Nope. We went Vonage, the internet phone, through our cable modem. For $27 and change a month, we get unlimited nationwide and Canada calling, anytime.
Anyone wants more specifics, I'll be happy to send an invite, just PM me an email address. I'll never go back now, it's just sweeet!

Only requirement, must have broadband internet (duh), won't work on slow connections (eg. satellite [fast downloads, but slow up]).

Cable modem = good
cell phone instead of land line = good
I hear people say that they won't get a cellphone because they don't want to be connected all the time. Haven't these people heard of screening calls? The person calling you doesn't know you didn't leave it in the car or at home!

Yea my dad has traveled alot in Africa and he says the same thing.

I thought about ditching it but then I worried about the kids being alone in the house sometimes and not having a 911 connection where the phone company automatically knows which house is calling. Has that changed with cell phones?
