flyingferret 0 #56 November 29, 2004 Interesting...I have a buddy like that who feels any movie that moves him is impressive. I agree, but some days I don't feel like being moved. It is intriguing that you felt disgusted with Lester Burnham (spacey). My overwhelming feeling at the end of the film was that he was the only character in the movie that lived. He died, but none of the other characters were alive in the remaining routine anyway.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. VanillaSkyGirl 6 #57 November 29, 2004 QuoteRosa, Have you seen Baraka? Breathtaking WOW~ I have to rent that. It's good to remind oneself that we are so tiny and the universe (and all in it) so vast. It seems like a very humbling film. The title Barakais a Sufi word...I know very little about Sufism. I read about The Whirling Dirvishes back in '97, and I went to see them at UCLA. I found it fascinating, although this may not be true or authentic to Sufism, since we were able to watch them on stage. Thank you for the suggestion, Linny. I thought a lot of people could relate to Lester. He felt he was in a position created mostly out of good intentions and good efforts, yet was very unhappy with the results. It was when he finally saw that he did not have to change it even, simply choose not to let it control, he finally started to truly experience life. An interesting parallel from a Nelson Demille novel character "The only truly safe boat is a boat in the harbor. But that is not what boats were made for." His character left me feeling that is only after you choose to acknowledge the full spectrum of inputs, that you can really feel you chose anything at all. Also, his needs were more important to him that making his own daughter feel valuable. He lived in his daydreams...but I firmly believe that your life is what you make it. The main reason that Spacey disgusted me was because I was a teenaged cheerleader once, and I remember being looked at like that (blatantly ogled) by most men (many older)...sooooo many times. I didn't totally understand my sexuality back then, but I knew that they thought I was attractive or whatever. After seeing this film, it kind of struck me that some of those looks (it's in the eyes) that I used to get were pretty lustful. I was only 15 or so, and when I saw the film in my mid-20's, I had to face that this was what some men think when they look at young girls. I really enjoyed this movie, however I have also heard it compared to Punch Drunk Love, which I really did not like. You definatly have to get into the story and have some patience to enjoy Eternal Sunshine... I personally think it is one of the best love stories that I have seen in a long time. If you are coming into this movie expecting a typical Jim Carrey movie, you will not like it. Edited to add: There are a few good threads on this movie here and here These threads are a good example of how thought provoking this movie can be. Don't read too far into them if you don't want to read spoilers though.
windcatcher 0 #72 November 30, 2004 here Rosa, don't know if you'd really like any of these, but here's a few that are on my mind, not necessarily my faves. *Easy Rider (love the music and free-spirited men, and motorcycle/highway shots) *The Jerk (I'm picking out a thermos for you, not an ordinary thermos, for you) *The Story of Us(the end will make you cry) *Galliopoli (starring a very young and handsome Mel Gibson, nice soundtrack w/ Albonini's Adagio in G) *Amelie (interesting foreign flick--very artsy) *A Beautiful Mind *The English Patient *Forrest Gump ( just bought the soundtrack, oldies rock!!!) *Batteries Not Included (this movie made me laugh when I was a kid, it's probably pretty hard to find and might not be considered that funny by today's standards *I am Sam ( Beatles songs remade, soundtrack is actually quite good--good story line) *Super Cop ( I love Jackie Chan!) *The Red Violin *Hurricane ( the one w/ Denzel Washington, NOT the old 80's (?) flick that I mistakenly rented and my family laughed at me for renting, I thought it was the Hurricane movie w/ Dylan's song in it) *A Simple Twist of Fate ( awesome movie for its storyline IMHO) *The Truman Show Just a few movies that you might not have seen yet--most of em are fairly decent ( I don't know what your tastes are though) Mother to the cutest little thing in the world...
