Please recommend a DVD to me.

Blockbuster is doing a promotional monthly movie pass deal for only $14.99 for the first month for unlimited DVDs. (This is $10.00 cheaper than usual.) I only have about a week left and can only take two DVDs/videos at a time.

I don't like action films, nor films that are very commercialized without substance. I am interested in any subject film in any language, as long as it's a well-made film or as long as the film has some redeeming qualities. What movies do you recommend?

On the local side, have you seen Le Declin de L'empire américain, and the recent follow up Les invasion barbares? Real good local movies.

Also, Jesus de Montreal. But I doubt this one will be carried down there (even the others are a tough call, but they did get international awards, so you never know)

You should check out Run Lola Run, its a german flick with subtitles. but its a very good action type movie with a chick for the star. It stars Franka Potente who was also in the Bourne Identity she played Jason Bournes girlfriend. Deffinatley worth seeing.

Ladykillers??? ugh.. that movie annoyed the crap out of me! It was funny at the end, but thats it.
I wouldnt watch it again voluntarily.

Cheaper by the Dozen is cute.
Somethings Gotta Give was good.
Not sure what else is out.. if they have any comedy DVD's to rent, I recommend Eddie Izzard, start with "Dressed to Kill".

Its definately a different kind of humor, I thought it was freak'n hilarious the entire way through.

I bet you didn't like "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" did you? Its very similar humor.

Really? How so? It's been awhile since I've seen them both, but I remember them completely different. I thought Lady Killers was a let down, and Oh Brother Where Art Thou was actually good, funny, well directed, and very well edited. They even digitally changed some of the colors to give the movie the feel they were going for. The fact that it's pretty much a remake of Homer's Odyssey gives it a whole other layer of humor too.
it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

Boondock Saints

Sorry for the hijack Rosa:(

Hey Dave, I know you're a big Boondock Saints fan, "Overnight" the documentary on Troy Duffy is playing @ a local theatre here & in the write up of it I believe they said something about a sequel to BS being in the works. I'll have to find Sunday's paper & read it again to be sure.

Ok, now that you're making me think about it, I can't explain it, I guess its a vibe/feel thing with me. Storyline, editing and photography aside, I guess it comes down to the really funny things are very subtle in both movies.

They are both "Cohen-story-movies" Most of the time you either like the cohen brothers or you don't. The movies on the surfaces are very different. Under the surface, they both as kind of 'random exploratory story telling vehicles' And I kinda of dig that. I thought Ladykillers was a bit Poe-esque (kinda obvious since all the Poe references)

Dave, I've seen both of those films by Joel Coen. While I loved O brother, Where Art Thou, Tom Hanks (and the movie, in general) did annoy me in The Ladykillers. :$

Boondock Saints seems a little much for me right now...I'm not feeling it today. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is one that I never got the chance to see, so I will check it out. Thanks Dave!

Remi, they have all three of those films. Les invasion barbares and Jesus de Montreal sound wonderful. Thank you.

DShiznit, I am NOT called VanillaSkygirl because of the movie Vanilla Sky :D, but I enjoyed watching that film once, as well as, it's predecessor Abre Los Ojos. Great concept, imo...

DanDruff, Run Lola Run is exactly the type of film that I would watch. I remember wanting to watch it many times before, but I have yet to see it. Thank you so much for the recommendation! B|
