old lightbulbs...

Recommended Posts

I heard that you aren't supposed to throw them in the trash because of toxic gases (or something to that effect), and I just replaced all the burned out ones in the house and I'm stuck with 6 of these things. Any ideas about what to do with them now?

Orfun #21... thanks PsychoBob!

Try to get them completely up your ass, then out again without breaking. Try it first with lube, then without...each method presents its own set of challenges...

Good luck...

Our community has a day where you can bring things like light bulbs, batteries, computers, etc. to drop off. Check with your dept. of water and power, at least that is the dept. that regulates our stuff. Good luck, and good for you for being conscientious about disposing of your bulbs.

That's true of old flourescent tubes; they contain mercury and should be disposed of in an appropriate place. Regular incandescents just contain glass, argon (which is as non-toxic as you can get) paint and some metal (tungsten and steel, usually.) You can throw em out without any more worry than a soda bottle.

I was always told to wrap 'em up in newspaper after my dad took out the trash and cut his hand!

When I was in my destructive-adolescent stages, we found a bunch of old fluorescent tubes lying in the school's trash. We took 'em and slung 'em at far away trees, watching them implode. It was awesome!

Recycle those fluorescent tubes!!!

I have a buddy out in B.C. that runs a business to process these things. You would be amazed at how much "stuff" they recover from fluorescent tubes.

I'm not surprised at the USA not recycling perfectly good glass, but I am alarmed that you do not advocate such an approach, particularly soda bottles.:)
The wee fella loves our monthly trips to the recycle bins, he gets to smash things up legitimately.B|

BTW, on most sites (big petrochemical installations) I've been too, where we use shit loads of tubes, there is a special muncher that chews up tubes safely, saves the garbage guys getting cut to shreds and separates the glass from the metal.
