AggieDave 6 #1 December 2, 2004 My monitor has started going into the first stages of monitor death. I'm so glad that it decided to do this right before christmas, right before I'm spending quite a bit of money on gifts and right before I travel to florida for skydiving. I just had to rant. I would like to replace it with a flat screen, but 21" flat screens are still really expensive.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." flyingferret 0 #3 December 2, 2004 You dont want an LCD, you just think you do. Get a minimal footprint CRT.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
AggieDave 6 #4 December 2, 2004 Linkage bro, linkage. especially since the 21" CRT I have now is roughly 2 1/2 ft deep. It takes a large chunk of my desk that could otherwise be used for more useful things, like all the clutter I have...--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." AggieDave 6 #6 December 2, 2004 I might do that...let me check out prices for a direct replacement of my monitor (21" crt). Thank you!--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
flyingferret 0 #7 December 2, 2004 21" beige or black regular http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=1995231 21" Flat .20 !!! Black http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=3314418 I have a 21", and would hate to go smaller again. I paid $450 4 years ago, and it was a steal. My second link above would be my choice if I had to buy again. LCD just arent there yet, it will ghost for games and DVDs, unless pay at least more than above monitors and lose 4 inches.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. AggieDave 6 #8 December 2, 2004 Yeah, same here, about 4 years ago I got this 21" and it was around $400 and I thought it was an absolute steal...Too bad the prices haven't come down too much, the cheapest 21" I've found so far is $218.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." flyingferret 0 #9 December 2, 2004 Well, the 'steal' has just become more of the average spread. LCDs did not help, that is what is holding the price probably. Everyone wants a 17" LCD. Screw that....watch a DVD or DOOM on a 21" CRT, and then tell me how cool your LCD is. Or try anything other than native resolution, for that matter.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

flyingferret 0 #12 December 2, 2004 Well it all depends on what you use it for. LCDs do not 'refresh' in the same manner as CRTs, so they have a delay if you will. IN fast situations they often 'ghost'. Also, LCDs by their very nature have a ntive resolution at which they look best. You push past that and it does the manipulation to make it all work, but it never looks as good. read this as a start: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20041123/index.html-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. bob.dino 1 #14 December 3, 2004 LCDs are a hell of a lot better than they were 2-3 years ago. If you've not demo'd one in a while, it could well be worth going back and having another look. Ghosting is not so much of a problem anymore. If you're a hardcore FPS kinda person (ghosting), or seriously into graphics (LCD can't do black), then get a CRT. Otherwise, if your budget can stretch, an LCD is a pretty nice alternative.
flyingferret 0 #15 December 3, 2004 Actually it all depends on the millisecond rating of the monitor. Anything over 20 is not worth it in my opinion. 16 ms is approx. 60fps. These days 60fps is pretty far from extreme in gaming or video work. I happen to know Aggiedave and he does both. In reality...the LCDs people in this thread are talking about buying come NOWHERE close to that. A good quality LCD with response <25ms is going to run significantly more than $500 http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20040326/lcd-08.html My point was that people are not really aware of the differences. If you buy an LCD, you are either: a. buying high end and paying more than for an equivalent CRT. b. buying for space and get less features than an equally priced CRT. Either of those are fine as long as you know you are doing it. I have known many people that didn't. So, the point is...buying an LCD on a budget buys you a square foot of desk not much else.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. PhreeZone 20 #16 December 3, 2004 >video work Video editing has nothing to do with frame rates. I've been using Premiere for years and have a CRT as the second monitor in my Dual setup. Editing is absolutly clear as can be on either of them.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
flyingferret 0 #17 December 3, 2004 Well, I never actually said editting. But it does depend on what LCD, and what you do. Response time is not the same as frame rate. I realize that NTSC is 29. something frames. It is simply an easy comparison as most people don't count in milliseconds. What LCD do you have? Just go read up on LCD testing. http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20040923/lcd_monitors-10.html Any LCD with a slow response time will ghost in fast movement caused by typically by FPS games or fast action in a video/DVD. There is nothing inherently 'wrong' with LCDs. It just annoys me that all the manufacturers are billing them as 'better' than CRTs, they arent', they simply save space. These http://news.com.com/Slimmer+tube+TVs+to+challenge+flat+panels/2100-1041_3-5458670.html will challenge them in the next year to two anyway.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
