Before my friend kills himself....

Recommended Posts

This guy that I work with just called me and told me he is going to buy a surplus canopy at an Army Navy store, and let a friend tow him behind his 4-wheeler. He wanted to know if he could borrow my rig to try it. After I said "hell no" ....he went on to ask whether he should get a round or square, big or small.....blah blah....I tild him to get the biggest round he could find...

He is going to do this next Tuesday...There is no talking him out of it....I assured him that he would not walk away from this but he wont listen to me.....

Anybody got any other advice?

(I will get video for Real TV)

Find smarter friends.

This guy sounds like he is a few bricks short of a deck...

Okay. Listen. Tell your friend that I very recently witnessed such an act that ended in a lot of pain and a serious amount of hospital bills. It was very scary. Make sure you set up multiple video angles - then maybe you can make some money back for some of the medical bills. :S Not a good idea. :|

Make sure to get an indepth interview with the Amazing Dumbass before he kills himself.
My advise to him is to get the smallest airlock, crossbraced canopy on the market, 100' of rope, a highly modified corvette....oh and don't forget a helmet camera for that POV footage.

Actually, most of you guys are completely wrong about this. I have done this many, many times with a round canopy. The one problem with a surplus canopy is that it probably won't be modified with steering vents, and that is a must to do this correctly. Also, it occurs to me that the canopies sold in surplus stores have no lines on them, so that's going to be pretty tricky. But using a 7TU or LL cheapo, what you do is get two "lauch assistants" to hold the canopy up as you run with the car (ATV) and it just lifts you right up and you can steer back and forth behind the vehicle like crossing the wake water skiing. It used to be what we routinely did on days too windy to jump at the dz. Use a rope about 300 ft long and you get some pretty scary altitude. You have to keep the vehicle out in a big open area and make really large radius turns to keep the rider from getting close to obstacles. (Don't drive down to a tree line and make a 180, the canopy will go out over the trees.) Also, be sure to launch INTO the wind. Of course a pilot or jumper would figure that out, but wuffos can be pretty ignorant of the basics. When you're done, the vehicle just stops, and you decend from about 100 feet. Hard hats, skateboard knee and elbow stuff might be advisable, too. And, like everyone else says, don't forget the video.

well if its a round......i hope he likes road rash and eating dirt cause thats whats gona happen till the 4 wheeler picks up enough speed to lift him off the ground....it will just drag him.

There is video floating around of someone that did that - and once in the air it lost some speed and he dropped hard.

Get video - RealTV needs some new stuff on it.

and for once its not me....that reminds me of a story....but thats a whole nother thread.....soon to follow

On a side note - someone took an old Monarch 135 at the DZ and made up handles to fly the thing like one of BigAir's Kites....and we flew it while on a wind hold. Add a nice piece of cardboard and we were surfing! Then there was the time someone (Rainbo) decided to hook up an old round to a sled in the middle of the winter .....
