Almost had to lay down my bike

Recommended Posts

Talk about dumb shits behind the wheel of a car.

An old man swept across 2 lanes and cut right in front of me on my bike on the way to the DZ today.

Usually I see these things coming before they happen, but this time it was a surprise, right (almost through) infront of me. I didn't even have any room to swerve he was so close.

So I grabbed all I had front and rear, just to keep from running into him going about 10mph faster then he was.

The both tires starts sliding, smoke was coming from my tires, but I was able to slow down enough to swerve away from his car.

When I pulled up next to him at the next light, he didn't even know anything had happened. Needless to say he got an ear full, but damnit that got my adrineline going!

Atleast I was wearing my leathers (jacket and chaps) as well as my helmet today.

So everyone, WATCH FOR BIKERS GOD DAMNIT!!!!

I hated that when I rode. I was going down a one way street when 3 cars pulled out in front of me and the last one stopped.. I used to ride pretty hard.. wheelies, endows...one foot wheelies... standing on gas tank...all that shit.. but that time I was jsut headed to school.. I ended up t-boning the 88 bronco by the passenger front tire...I put a nice dent in his hood with my helmet as I flipped over the hood and landed about 20-25 feet past the old man. (he was 88 and shouldnt be allowed to have a licence) Somehow (as always thus far) I didnt break anything.. I had microspasms up both sides of my spine and did like 8 weeks of physical therapy,... havent riden really since then...just be safe.. when people say its the "other people you have to look out for" they arent lying..

I had a similar situation the other night, I just knew I was about to get smacked, but I got lucky and made it to the shoulder of the road in time. There was alot of gravel there too, which added to the pucker factor. It makes me want to only ride during the day out in the country.

Glad you're ok... I go through that shit in my go-kart sized car and on my motorcycle every day. It seems that the housewives, old men/women, and 16 year old girls are the worst of them.

People should really have to do more than back around a corner and drive around the block to prove that they're worthy of a driver's license.

No offence, but doesn't sound like you should have one either. Save that shit for a parking lot or the track and leave the innocent bystanders out of it.

Glad you are alright. Been there, done that....although it was at night and I had a passenger. Luckily, he did not close near as fast as your guy did...so I hit the shoulder and laid all over the horn...I do like harley horns ;)

You and I both know Central Exp. is the worst. But sometimes you have to watch those smaller streets where people are just stupid.

And for the record, it has nothing to do with cross multiple lanes. I go from entrance ramp to hammer lane in one fast arc on my bike all the time, and cross multiple lanes in my car. It has everything to do with being aware of all the angles.

Louds pipes... etc. Best advice I heard "Ride like you are invisible" Unfortunately it is that bad somedays.

I dont understand American laws regarding traffic.

I have been to traffic school twice now for speeding tickets, and both times (they were different and by different people) the course was pretty much about how dangerous the roads really are.

So does the government think that traffic school gives the appropriate driver education to make the roads safer (which is the purpose of the course). Thats just stupid.

If they are really concerned with making the roads safer, then make the freaking test harder! My drivers test was all of 6 minutes spent driving around a block, stopping, reversing and then parralel parking between two imaginary cars!!! WTF?!?!?

Sure, that makes is easy for me, but that means it makes it easy for all those other retards too, and I dont want them on the road!!

I also propose that people get tested every 5 years or so. I'm sorry, but old people lack a lot in their responsiveness, and they really need to speed up sometimes.

Americans are known worldwide as bad drivers. Why dont they do something about it?!!??!

It is actually a very complex issue that would be solved by nothing less an a complete restructuring of most urban transportation.

In reality, there are just too many people. In a place like DFW you drive aggressively or you will spend twice as long getting anywhere and probably have greater risk. The whole idea of 2second + following distance, etc goes out the window in urban america. And yielding is creatively bent. Because if you don't, everytime you create a safe cushion, someone fills it. Is this safer? No, but it is part or modern driving.

IMO, possible steps to improve:
Everyone must drive a limited power compact 'learner's vehicle' for a period before getting a license

Decent public transportation

Divide highways like Central in Dallas, so that people getting off at the next exit do not enter the portion of the road for people getting off in 5 miles

Screw HOV, and give us lane by speed system.

Ticket the shit out of people driving slow when the signs say "Left lane for passing only"

Another problem I've noticed pretty often on my bike:

People who think that driving 2" behind your rear wheel will get them somewhere faster when you're stuck in traffic anyway.

What the fuck are they thinking? I've actually had some of them go as far as to beep at me and give me the finger because I was making a right turn and they felt that I was slowing them down or something :S

When I'm in a car and I see someone riding a motorcyclists ass, I'll make an effort to get in between them and back the other person off.

Ok, a question for the more experienced riders then I...

Do I need to worry about a possible flat spot on my tires now? When I get home from the DZ I'm going to put my bike on the lift and check my tires, I know with the tires on my truck it can make a difference, but those are mud tires with large lugs...not sure about a motorcycle tire.

IF you flat spotted the tire, I would be concerned. BUT, if you had, I think you would have felt it coming home. Due to the different in motorcycle tires as opposed to the flat cross section of an auto tire...I would really surprised if you flatted it though. Just my guesses though.

Yes you do need to worry. If you smoked em up while skidding, chances are you did some damage.
when tires get irregular wear the balance goes out. You can never correct the uneven wear, no rotating, alignment, nor balance will ever stop it.

The flatter they are the more of a vibration you will feel. Your handle bars shaking will indicate that the front is out of balance and the seat shaking will indicate the rear. Unless you wore it down to the secondary rubber you really don't have a potential blow out waiting, but the traction is reduced. Not so critical in a car but on a bike I would do a careful inspection.
Cup your hand around the tire (sidewall to sidewall) and lightly rub around the whole tire, if its there you will feel it.

Oh, not much of a rider expert, even though I have had a motorcyle license since I was 17, but I was in the Retail/Wholesale tire industry for 15 years.
Its all about the rubber.

Ok dumb joke my mother told me 20 years ago.

What do you call a company that makes 365 rubbers in a year.

A "Goodyear".

Ok I will go away now.

Man, I knew you were good for something besides organizing a badass boogie.:P

I didn't notice any vibrations the 5 miles I drove after locking it up, to the DZ, but I was so pissed off I may have just not noticed.

I've got a quick 15 miles to ride home from the DZ in a little while, I'll pay attention to it then and put my scooter on the lift at the house to check the tires.

Thanks!

When you inspect them look for discoloration of the rubber.
When a section of a tire wears abnormally the rubber is a different color than the rest of the tire.
just a shade difference, but noticable.

So do we go five days this year for SkyFest or 9?
What ya think? Rantoul seemed to be quite small, maybe we can sneak up on them in our Texas way?
How bout a DC3?
Ride carefully my friend.
