freeflir29 0 #1 December 13, 2004 Don't know how many book readers we have from that area of the globe but I'm reading a book that you guys may appreciate. Besides......if you ever come over here....that's one hell of a plane ride and you'll need something to fill the time. It's called "West With the Night" by Beryl Markham. She grew up on her fathers farm in Kenya in the early 20th century and by the 1930's was a bush pilot flying to Sudan, Tanganyika, Kenya, and Rhodesia. OK...so two of those countries don't even exist anymore. That's Africa for you..... Anyway......some fascinating stories of her childhood as well as some great bush pilot stuff. I can't imagine being able to go hunting wild boars with a SPEAR and having Murani tribesman as your guides and best friends when you were a child. Reading this book it's easy to see why so many Europeans decided to stay.

Tonto 1 #3 December 13, 2004 Ahh. How times have changed. Northern Rhodesia is now Zambia. Southern Rhodesia is now Zimbabwe. Tanganika is now Tanzania. We now hunt wild boar (Bush pig) with a Swiss Army knife as the spear was considered "unsporting." If you weigh over 60kg (132 lbs) you're only allowed to use the little blade for the same reasons.tIt's the year of the Pig.
Peej 0 #4 December 13, 2004 Clay, You should also check out a a book called "The Journey is the Destination" by Jennifer New, it's about a young kid named Dan Eldon who grew up in Africa to American parents. It chronicles his life, experiences as a war photographer in Mogadishu (sp?) and his eventual death in the "Black Hawk Down" incident. Very very good.
