My mom

Recommended Posts

I have THE best mom in the world! I apologize for the length, but bare with me.

Travis and I live in Florida, my family lives in Texas (his is in Minnesota, by the way). When my brother and I were little, my dad got transferred to Michigan. My grandfather used to record himself reading Golden Books and talking to us then send it to us in Michigan. This is one of my favorite memories of my grandfather. He passed away a week after my 7th birthday.

Tonight, Travis and I opened our gifts sent from my family. I had one gift marked, "OPEN LAST." So, I waited and finally opened it not knowing WHAT to expect. In the box were 6 of my favorite Golden Books! Just looking through them made me tear up. Then there was a letter from my mom:

"When we moved to Michigan in 1982 and that first Christmas came, we received our Christmas packages from Grandma and Grandpa in Texas. In that bundle was a brown paper sack that had "OPEN NOW!!" written on it. When we opened it, it had six Little Golden story books and a cassette tape inside. We put the tape in and listened and it was Grandpa reading the stories to you, just as if he was sitting there in front of you.

I have searched high and low all over the country (literally) for this last year and have finally found two each of all of the books that he read to you. I have kept the original books and the original tape, and given each of you copies of the tape and the books that I have found. I hope that you will cherish the books and the tape as much as I have through the years. They are a part of your heritage. If they are taken care of, your kids and grandkids will be able to hear your Grandfather read to you. And when you are much older, you will still be able to hear him telling you bedtime stories with love."

THIS IS THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT I HAVE EVER GOTTEN!! I cried like a baby when I read the letter, just like I am crying now. :)

aww - thats a really nice gift.

It's the small, inexpensive, thoughtfilled gifts that mean so much more.

When I was younger my dad's cousin had a company got me to sell Golden Books to my friends - I guess you could call it my first job. I got 10x's my allowance of $.25 for each book. I thought that was pretty cool! :D

Enjoy the memories!

Check around and try to find someplace that can dub off the tape onto a CD. That way you don't have to worry about the tape wearing out.

About all that I had left of my Dad was a tape of him playing the guitar and singing to Mom. I had it dubbed off to CD, but I think it was in the house when it was vandalized.

The other kids have copies, so I'm going to try to borrow one and get it dubbed again...

I don't know the process, but I bet you could hook a camcorder to the tape deck (RCA cables) and record it then take it to the computer and burn the disc??
Not sure if you would need to put it in a "movie maker" program but I bet it could be done.

Thats realy cool, the 60's footage we found after my father passed is great, we get to hear his voice whenever.
Cool stuff from Grandpa.

Every computer I've ever seen has 3 sound plugs at a minimum. One goes out to the speakers, one is for the microphone, and one is for line input. Using a mini stereo to mini stereo cable, you can easily hook up a walkman to the computer, and use a simple program, such as sound recorder (built in to Windblows) to record it to hard disk. After that any burning program can get it onto cd.
