Vector 2 and Freeflying

Recommended Posts

Hi,
I've got a vector 2- old but solid rig. I have not attempted any FF on it as I read on ( http://www.dropzone.com/gear/Detailed/97.html ) that is not FF friendly (i.e. premature deployments etc.). The main difference I've spotted on my vector 2 so far is that my riser covers are Velcro secured (FF friendly rigs have tuck-in flaps), also flap that covers main pin is not particularly secure (I haven't seen, but I think flap opens during free fall).
In general main pin is pretty secure and I don't think bridle is exposed at all (just a bit where my pilot chute enters spandex pocket).
Do you think it's safe to attempt any FF manoeuvres on my current rig? If not do you think it is possible to fix it by taking it to the rigger?

Thanks and blue skies!

The answers to all these questions and more can be found via the search function. Did you try searching vector 2 freefly? Use the search function. It is your friend.

Search is you friend.
V2 is not freefly friendly.
I have done some and am still here, but over the 18 years I have jumped the rig, we collectively have learned a lot about safer rigs. Recommend that if you want to freefly, you get a V3 or better.
If you're just looking to finish your basic flips for license, probably OK but make sure the velcro is fresh and the loops are new and properly tensioned.

Still looking to afford the V3...

I can tell that googling for "vector II freefly" gave pretty much zero results.

Huh?! Who said anything about Google? I'll say it again. Search

Top left, See the menu with links for My Friends, My Posts, Settings, Subscriptions, Search, ...

Top right. See the Search box?

I even posted a link to do the exact search I suggested for you. Did you even bother to click it? It returns 127 results for a search for "vector 2 freefly", but I guess 127 is pretty close to zero.

Jumped the V-2 for many years. Great rig in it's day, no problem with anything (including tracking) for RW or head-down, but not good for sit, the main and reserve flaps will open. I still own it and would jump it without reservations for RW.
Make sure your closing loop is appropriate, not loose.
I never had a problem, but did almost no sit.
I've now got a V-3.
This is the paradox of skydiving. We do something very dangerous, expose ourselves to a totally unnecesary risk, and then spend our time trying to make it safer.

I had my fist malfunction when I was a new jumper and decided to try a sit jump with my V2. The riser came open and a toggle unstowed. I saw a flash of yellow, went to my belly and deployed. The brake line wrapped aroud the other riser and knotted. The canopy began turning and I couldnt get the knot out. I had to cut it away.

The opening set the knot so well that It took over 20 minutes to get the knot out on the ground.

I still have the V2 as a backup and feel it to be perfectly suitable for RW. Howevr, I will never take it freeflying again.
