homer 0 #1 December 15, 2004 I was looking through the list of Colorado DZ's as possible places to hit on my west coast vacation when I return from Iraq and I noticed that the website for Front Range Skydivers has suspended it's operation indefinitely and gives a listing of other DZ's near by. I was just wondering what happened to the DZ it looked like a nice place and yes, I have done a quick forums search but found nothing as to it's closing. mx757 4 #2 December 15, 2004 I think that DZ was run by Zane Joel who died recently in a CRW accident. [see Incidents fourms] That may be the reason. I'm not sure about this.. I'm just guessing here...I was pretty sure Zane Joel ran that drop zone. at least he did when I was in Rifle Colo. back in 1987
Miami 0 #3 December 15, 2004 It has closed down unfortunately. Just didn't have enough business is what it really boiled down to...had nothing to do with the crw incident. I was working there, one of 4 employees, and I think the final nail in the coffin was when 3 of us got injured (all non-skydiving...one motorcycle wreck, one rolled ankle, one broken arm) and could not jump for a while. They do still say they are going to host special events but I haven't heard anything yet.Miami
wingnut 0 #4 December 16, 2004 i jumped there back in 2002...it was a fun place with a caravan, last i had heard the had lostthe caravan and had a 206 and then closed..... i jumped down at skydive the rockies andit was nice. if you are goning south in the state i recomend that... about 50 miles south of colo springs...or 20 miles from pueblo (maybe closer, can't remeber) ______________________________________ "i have no reader's digest version"
riddler 0 #5 December 16, 2004 Yeah - that same caravan that Calhan was renting got rented out to STR the following summer, and I think it's been there since. STR is also a nice DZ - less cactus than Calhan, anyway Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
flyangel2 2 #6 December 16, 2004 Nope, Joel didn't run Front Range Skydivers. That would be the Board of Directors with Cass Seymore being one of them that help run the DZ. Yes Scott, it was a really fun place to just get away and jump. Very fast landings. When you make it this way, let me know.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. flyangel2 2 #8 December 16, 2004 Just keep me posted as to when you plan to stop by. I'll even make the skydive with you an "event". That way I'll feel okay about jumping here in Colorado. Keep your head down and come back home from the sand safe.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.
