kai2k1 0 #1 December 22, 2004 You're flying commercial when the plane has a total blowout of both engines. You have your rig as a carry on. Looking out the window you estimate that you're at about 15k. Is it possible to gear up, open a door in the rear of the plane and exit to save your life? Or would the terminal velocity of the plane make this nothing more than a suicide attempt? There's no truer sense of flying than sky diving," Scott Cowan
AggieDave 6 #2 December 22, 2004 QuoteOr would the terminal velocity of the plane make this nothing more than a suicide attempt? With the engines out? Opening the door could really fuck things up for the pilot. If the plane was uberfucked...I'd rather leave and take my chances. I've been in 1 plane crash, that's enough for me.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
kai2k1 0 #3 December 22, 2004 I thought about that too. My reasoning would be that the plane is going down anyway, so why would it matter? Jib 0 #4 December 22, 2004 I'm not sure that you can open the doors and if passengers saw you gearing up, I bet they'd be trying to take it from you. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. kai2k1 0 #6 December 22, 2004 Thats something else i thought about. Dont aircraft doors have locks on them so that you cannot open them in flight. How bout the emergency doors? There's no truer sense of flying than sky diving," Scott Cowan
Kennedy 0 #7 December 22, 2004 IF we're kinda coasting and things seem like we might not end up as rubble strew out over a few hundred yards, maybe I'd just STFD & STFU. In a balls out, holy shit, we're-gonna-die dive, -IF- I could gear up and open the door, you're damn right I would. edit because I type like a fucktard when I'm rushing witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
PhreeZone 20 #8 December 22, 2004 Unless the wings are falling off the plane the pilots have way better control of the plane then you do. Doors will not open due to the DB Cooper switch. Windows are the next closest thing and if you've ever tried to open a car door at 60 mph imagine what its like to force something open under pressue at 250+ mph Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
wingnut 0 #9 December 22, 2004 phree, the window exits wouldnt open because thr cabinis presurized, now if they lost cabinpressure you couldopenone of those just fine as they pull in.... ______________________________________ "i have no reader's digest version"
freeflir29 0 #10 December 22, 2004 Yep.......I THINK you can open the over wing exits if the cabin isn't pressurized. However......trying to get off a wing at ~200 Knots WITHOUT getting killed isn't gonna be easy. I'd say find a seat in the last row, take EVERYTHING out of your pockets, remove ANY polyester clothing and non-leather shoes, and if you have time.....run to the lav and douse yourself with water. diablopilot 2 #14 December 22, 2004 Quoteyou've ever tried to open a car door at 60 mph imagine what its like to force something open under pressue at 250+ mph Airliner doors open inward first so that they are more efficient and stronger as being part of the pressure capsule that an airliner is. Would you get it open at 600 MPH without having it blow in and kill you? Against how many pounds of pressure? While defeating the locks in place to prevent such a thing? With the aircraft pitching and diving? While putting your rig on? Yeah but then you'd have to get out safely in a 600 MPH slipstream. No "cut" on this one. Fo anyone who's floated a King Air, Otter, or other turbine jump plane without a good cut, that was probably only about a 120 mph blast. Good luck. Now if the plane some how starts breaking up I'll do my damnedest to get to the carry on with my rig in it! But all engines out? I'll risk the landing.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
