Would this work to stay warm?

Recommended Posts

Trying to come up with ways to stay warm while jumping at Eloy. Have several layers of different types of thermal undergarments, but came up with an idea in addition to that. There are these pad things, made to use for sore muscles. You activate them and they heat up and stay warm for 8 hours. They are thin and they make them to go on your back, stomach, knees, elbows, etc. So I'm thinking I could buy them all and put them all over my body and it would probably keep me warm. But I'm concerned that could the friction from the air while in freefall possibly cause them to heat up to extreme temperatures to the point of burning me? I don't know how they work but have visions of being in freefall and burning up...YIKES! I doubt that would happen but I tend to overthink things and envision the worst case scenario. So what do ya think?

Ah, I see that you are From Perris, CA. It must be hard jumping in a place like Southern California - Beautiful Weather year round, nice big airplanes, several DZ's that want your business - I feel bad for you. Us here in Northern Kansas Will think of you, next time we go up, okay?!?!? :D

Seriously, That is a good idea to stay warm, but I think the solution to the problem is even easier than that. If you have a full-face, some reasonable protection along your body, arms, and Neck, and GOOD GLOVES, you shouldn't have a problem. Remember, you can have your torso nice & toasty, but still freeze if you hands & head are not properly covered.
Hope this helped!

Layering is the key to staying warm as layering traps heat. Get some good thin thermals (top and bottoms) and wear a couple of them at a time, plus a neck warmer (Square 2 have heaps in stock if needed). Wearing thin thermals, even two at aq time, won't bulk up your jumpsuit or restrict movement. Hands - silk liners are the best under gloves and keep your hands toasty warm.

The weather is a bit up and down temperature wise here in Eloy at the moment. If you are on 1st load, yeah, rug up, otherwise it should be fine.

Yes, I have a full face helmet and good gloves, but since I was born and raised in sunny so cal and have never jumped anywhere else I'm not used to cold weather jumping and am really concerned about staying warm. I'm a total wuss when it comes to cold weather. Thanks for your input.

Yeah, I'm definately layering, 3 sets if thermals and a turtleneck. Just have heard about how cold it can be so want to be prepared. Want to get in as many jumps as I can, not sitting out cuz I'm too cold to jump.

You're going to Eloy... not Alaska.

Yeah, I know, but having only jumped in warm weather I'm really concerned about jumping in weather that's colder than so cal. I would not survive in Alaska [:/].

I was about to say. Lately, with it being 30 on the ground and 10-20 up top, I was getting by with underarmor top, long sleeve shirt, jumpsuit. Use glove liners and I recommend neoprene gloves but everyone has their personal preferences.
I also jump open faced and half shell helmets and only cover up with the underarmor head covering. No issues. It shouldn't be that bad.

See ya there!

Wear a pair of jeans and a heavy long sleeve t-shirt under your jumpsuit, and a good pair of gloves. Winter wieght football gloves work well. Don't overdo it. You don't want to break a sweat on the way to altitude. You might feel a slight chill. Add another t-shirt perhaps. You'll be having too much fun to realize you're cold, anyway.

Eloy is usually nice on the ground during the Christmas Boogie (high 60's-70), but can be abit cold in the air. Layers are good enough though.

I dont think the heat pads you spoke of will heat up with air movement though.

But if they do, try jumping with enough of then to make you look like a METEOR. :D:D:D

They work great. I use them in the tunnel on really cold days. One under each armpit is perfrect. And they are cheep to. Like a $1.50 for a 3 pack.

Please be careful not to place them directly on your skin, but on you underlayer of clothing instead.

I know it's not a problem.

I got curious and checked out the forecast differences between Eloy and Perris.. It looked like Eloy would be about 4 or so degrees colder.

JP.. you a big wuss now? :P

When are you going to come visit me and Jeff?? We've got a spare bedroom with your name on it!

Well, not really, but if you come up i will put a sign with your name on it and maybe an "I had a good swoop today" sign if you're lucky!

That's exactly what I was thinking!
I'd be jumping in a tshirt and shorts down there.

Maybe next year.

Oh yeah, another good trick is a pair of rubber gloves (the doctor kind) under your skydiving gloves. Really helps take the edge off the fingetip nippyness.....

Yeah, that helps alot when the weather's cold up top. Those latex gloves tend to make your hands sweat, though. So, Ev, if you want to save yourself from the sweaty-palm syndrome get a pair of glove liners. I found mine at Sport Chalet. They're great!

I use the "hot hands" and place them on the back of my hand and then put my gloves on. The trick is that you don't want to sweat, once you start that, you'll get cold. Make sure the layer closest to your skin is something that will "wick" the sweat away. Also, don't be in a hurt to put your gloves on in the plane. Again, once your hands start sweating, they will get cold.

Don't have all your layers very tight together... That will be no use against cold... Let "some" air in between layers. And also if you have some kind of windstopper layer under your suit, that works great.

Hope your suit is wide enough :):P

At first glace this appears to be a good idea. However, think very hard before doing it....a cameraflyer above you would be pretty pissed if one of those little heat packs finds its way out of your suit into the air stream! :S
