USPA RENEWAL

Recommended Posts

THis probably has been covered a thousand times but....

I am a college student that cannot afford his renewal fee, money is very tough right now and I'm barely staying current. I plan on studying hard and finishin quick, then get out, get a good job and jump on money in the bank, not money my dad thinks i'm spending on food!:D

So....My membership Expired in October 2004... i plan on doing a jump every now and then, it hasn't been so tough thart I cannot stay current, and my local (yes, they are USPA) DZO's are helping me out with rentals and letting me pack.

SHOULD I RENEW? OR can I drop it if I know I will only just stay current, making maybe an average of 2 or 3 jumps every 3 months.

Also - it seems dangerous to stay current, but only just. 1 jump a month will be fun, but you will quickly forget all the dangers. I have been asking the people around me to just keep an eye out for me, and I go solo jumps, or with an experienced jumper.

Thanks for your all's advice....

Bertus G

Not to be harsh as this may sound but:

Uncurrent skydivers are dead skydivers.

No this is not to say that you will die, but you certainly put yourself at a higher risk.

The membership is only once a year, but your currency is monthly.

Maybe your timing isn't right for jumping now.

Don't think I am trying to talk you out of jumping, that goes against everything I do in regards to this sport, but I would rather you and others stay safe.

To put something off for now and being able to go all out later and be safe is probably worth the wait.

My first jump was in 1984, I averaged 10 jumps a year, scared to death each time, I took things for granted (especially being born into the sport) and always questioned myself as to why I was doing it.
It wasn't till 2001 that I got back into it and made 900 jumps in two years, finally I feel like a skydiver and very safe and confident.

maybe keep your membership current so you can stay informed through Parachutist, and a monthly reminder of your goals.

Please be careful in your decision, lives depend on it.

I wish you well, and hope it works out for you.

Thanks, I haven't been told that, and that was my worries exactly. Just one experienced person thinking that is enough to change my mind.

I think the best thing to do in my situation is to quit jumping for a few college years all together. :S I thought about this, but it is a sad thought and no one wants to do it. Well, thats probably the way its gotta go...

It sucks to have the love and the enthusiasm, the knowledge and the skills to do something but you cannot for other reasons.

like governator once said - I'll be bak...

Cheers

How about this for a situation...

On one of your currency jumps you happen to lose a shoe, that shoe happens to fall into someones car, house, anything and causes a few hundred in damages. If you were a USPA member your liability insurance will cover that with you not having to worry about anything. Otherwise you now have to be responcible for the damages.

We had a jumper fly into a temp power line and broke it this fall. He would to had to pay the emergency call to the power company to dispatch a crew and repair the line on a Sat if he was'nt a USPA member. As it is all he had to do was the paperwork.
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

...And THAT'S why I love this sport!!B|

Bert...
Take Jimmy up on his offer, you can pay him
back with jump tickets after you get your degree.

Don't sweat it..
a lot of us have been there too.;)

I fortunately had several hundred jumps when
I went to college, and paid for my jumping by
training students and doing demos...

But because of $ didn't get my D license
until I graduated...
5 years after I qualified for it...[:/]

You do what you have to, to get the degree,
then the jumping's gravy...

We'll wait for ya!!:)

ummm out of pure curiousity, what about if some jumpers did a pumpkin jump and it crashed down and damaged property? would USPA insurance cover that?

Thank Jimmy and know that if you want something bad enough you will find a way to work hard enough to be able to do it! If you can't then take a break. this isn't golf!
:S

I agree that this isn't golf (which is already expensive) and I do want it really bad but...

There are also other things in life which is important, like providing for my family and being able to fulfill all my other dreams besides skydiving my ass off.

So it is a matter of choosing between different things now so that later I can enjoy all of the activities I wish to engage in fully, not half assed and at the expense of other things such as college funds for my kid.

This all off course is self explanatory. Here is a little graph to visualize what I plan.

Probably not...

That would be in violation of several BSR's & Law's...

I think he was kidding! ;)
See: Trick or Treat? - skydivers drop pumpkin
guy who just renewed, try selling stuff on ebay-- you'd be amazed the stuff people buy! That's what I've been doing anyway :)edit: clicky
