ladyskydiver 0 #1 December 28, 2004 And, please, don't turn this post into a bashing thread, k? And moderators, if this should go into SC, **shiver** please move it. I can not comprehend the number of people dead in the tsunami disaster. It's just too huge. My question is...are they going to be able to bury their dead or will they cremate them or ????Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. ChasingBlueSky 0 #3 December 28, 2004 They have already started mass graves. If you check out the pictures on CNN, Yahoo, etc you wil find that any large hall has been converted into a morgue where they work on trying to identify the remains then they bury them. On some islands they are just lining the bodies on the beach. In a tragedy like this they do not have the time or resources for individual burials mostly due to health concerns._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Yea, like Cora it just doesn't make sense to me either. The destructive power is just starting to make sense to me as I see cars piled onto other cars and just read about the coastal train that was pushed off it's tracks and into a swamp killing all 800 passengers_________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... tigra 0 #7 December 28, 2004 I worry about how they can possibly identify everyone! I have a brother who doesn't keep in close contact. He doesn't have a permanent address or phone number. I do have an email address for him, but it takes him a good 6 months to respond to my emails. I do know he loves Thailand and usually spends his winters there if he gets enough work on the fishing boats or as a massage therapist the rest of the year. I called the state department today and left his name and my number to call if they find him among the dead or the living. All I can do is wait and hopefully we'll hear from him first, not them. Kind of sad that I'm hoping my brother was down on his luck and had no money to go to Thailand this year!
Sheenster303 0 #8 December 28, 2004 I can't even comprehend how many people that is. It is so sad. Thinking along the same lines though, what about all the billions of people that have already died in this world and have been buried? I'm surprised that there is even enough room left to bury more people. I guess a lot more people than we think have been cremated.I'm so funny I crack my head open! lawrocket 3 #9 December 28, 2004 It's been two days, and they are up to over 50,000, with more to come. Add to that the inevitable deaths from disease that always follow something like this. That's why speed in burying is pretty important right now. My wife is hotter than your wife.
Superman32 0 #10 December 29, 2004 The disease issue is very important and it can easily become a global health threat as the aid workers begin to go home. Something else that is horrible: The rescue ops in Sri Lanka have another huge issue -- land mines. The country has been riddled with land mine fields, some of which were clearly marked. Now with the devastation, markers have been stripped off and the mines scattered. A huge problem for the people and the rescuers Inveniam Viam aut Faciam I'm back biatches! diverdriver 6 #12 December 29, 2004 Quoteomg that's just terrible. Yes, and I know of at least one DZ.com member who lost a relative in the disaster. I pray for him and his family. I'm not going to post who because it is a private matter but we should all keep it in mind that this world is getting to be a smaller place and everything effects everyone now-a-days.Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125
VanillaSkyGirl 6 #13 December 29, 2004 That's so awful, Tigra. My boyfriend has a very close friend who lives in Thailand. He called him and is waiting to hear back from him, but his friend has yet to call. I also had totally seperate family friends perish in Sri Lanka. It's just a horrible, horrible disaster. Something of this magnitude can touch any of us. I hope that your brother is ok, and that you hear from him soon. Cora ~ The whole "mass graves" situation is so sad, but what can they do? Michele 1 #14 December 29, 2004 Such a horrible thing. I am so very sorry to all those who have had this tragedy touch them in a personal way. And like Cora, I'm finding it difficult to comprehend the magnitude of this event. God speed, and God bless... cloudseeker2001 0 #15 December 29, 2004 Mass graves and maybe mass burnings. The 1900 storm of Galveston they tried to dump all the bodies at sea-but they washed back up a few days later. Then they built huge "bone fires" for weeks. "Some call it heavenly in it's brilliance, others mean and rueful of the western dream"
tigra 0 #16 December 29, 2004 Thank you Rosa, If he's safe and here in the states, I hope he's got the good sense to get in touch soon! He's sort of a "free spirit" and I have no idea where he is. I just know he likes to spend his winters on the beaches of Thailand, so I'm worried, but its out of my hands for now! All I can do is wait. I'm sorry for your loss and I hope your boyfriend's friend is OK, too! maura

bch7773 0 #18 December 29, 2004 I saw a news article about it... they dug a large pit with a bulldozer, and the indians lined up with their dead and each put the body in, and the bulldozer would push some sand over it. Its kinda sad because each family got maybe 10 seconds to grieve at the grave before having to move for the next family. MB 3528, RB 1182

sunshine 2 #21 December 29, 2004 Just seeing the pics and reading the articles in the paper makes me shake my head in disbelief. To just be going on about your daily life and have it shattered out of nowhere is freaky. I don't like this at all. Edited to add: I found this pic and thought it was beautiful and wanted to share. The caption under it reads: An Indonesian woman attends a candlelight vigil in Jakarta December 29, 2004 for victims of tsunami-hit Aceh. Reeking corpses rotted in the tropical sun from India to Indonesia on Wednesday and many who escaped death from one of the worst tsunamis in history fought for survival against thirst and disease. sunshine 2 #23 December 29, 2004 A local church is gonna set up a clothing drive in the next few weeks for those that lost everything. Maybe everyone can check with their local churches to see if something similar is being done. I know i have lots of clothes i can donate. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug!
PhillyKev 0 #24 December 29, 2004 That's actually not much help. It would cost more to ship the clothes there than it would to buy clothes locally there. They need cash.
Michele 1 #25 December 29, 2004 Know what, though, Kev? Clothes and blankets will help. Cash will help. Lots of things will help. So why not give what you can? I don't have much cash, but I've got some clothes. I've also got some emergency food (earthquake kit stuff) which needs to be used within the next 6 months. So I'll send that over, too. I will do what I can. If it can't be cash, then it will be how *I* can help...
