Disaster question....

Recommended Posts

It will help people locally. And donating that stuff is always a good idea. Not trying to dissuade anyone from helping. I'm just pointing out that if your desire is to make sure that your donation will go to the victims of this tragedy, cash is a better option and will go further. But you're right, it's better to give what you can than nothing at all.

And that suggestion comes directly from the red cross.

Unsolicited, spontaneous donations of goods and services from individuals and community groups, though well intentioned, have hidden costs and pose a number of complications for relief efforts. For these reasons, the Red Cross is unable to accept any large collections of items, such as used clothing, hygiene items, furniture, toys, and canned goods. Nor are we able to accept small, individual donations of these items.

That's actually not much help. It would cost more to ship the clothes there than it would to buy clothes locally there. They need cash.

Kevin is right. Collections of clothing and food is not going to help much. Most of it will end on a dock or in a warehouse somewhere.

If people feel the need to help, make cash donations to a recognized disaster relief organization. The Red Cross is one that comes to mine. Maybe contact any FEMA teams that might be in your area for suggestions.

Be careful, this will bring the dirt bags out with phoney pleas for money and goods.

For all i know, they're collecting the clothes then selling them at a goodwill store to make cash to send. I have no idea. What i do know is a church is collecting clothes to help out somehow. I can drop off my clothes and let them figure out what best to do with it.

I can not comprehend the number of people dead in the tsunami disaster

I was thinking of something to compare this to and thought of Hiroshima when the A-bomb hit it. The a-bomb in Hiroshima instantly killed 70,000 people, and injured another 70,000.

This seems to be the death level of this event...

I know you weren't. And you stated my point well; I can give something, even if it's not cash. If the Red Cross takes my donations, and uses them for local families which would've cost $$ to handle, that money may in fact make it to those impacted by this tragedy. But I bet I can also manage to scrape up together the price of a jump ticket at least, and send it to them as well. If everyone sent one jump ticket price to the Red Cross, it would help immensely.

I think I'll do both.

This story is unreal - 20% of the entire island is left standing. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/12/29/1103996615409.html?oneclick=true

There are a bunch of fund raisers happening around Chicago. The local news is trying to give the major ones plenty of coverage and letting people know how to contact them.

Linkin Park (the band) has set up a site via the Red Cross for donations as well. They started it off with a $100k donation. www.musicforrelief.com -- that site will not go live until 3pm EST according to MTV.com. If you don't trust a site like that, you can always donate right to www.redcross.org...I know I will be making a larger donation on payday.

It still doesn't make sense - 77,000 dead and counting...and it will get worse as they are just now getting to some of the islands. I also can't believe that the waves killed people in Africa as well. When I try to put it into perspective...I try to imagine one of the larger towns around here with 100k people in it just completely destroyed and dead....[:/]

That was how I looked at it.

Its easy to think about your liquid capital, which is likely all budgeted already, and conclude that you cant donate.

Think of it as giving up a few fun jumps.
If you have budgeted for 6 jumps this month, make 3 instead and donate the ticket money.

Its a small sacrifice for a good cause.
They need the relief more than we need those jumps.

Know what, though, Kev? Clothes and blankets will help. Cash will help. Lots of things will help. So why not give what you can?

Agreed. I will give cash, but I also have many warm clothes that would probably fit any children or small teens/adults who are still alive. I would think that much of the clothing or even apparel businesses would be lacking in clothing. So much is in ruins or severly damaged. [:/]

Help is help...and we should do as much as we can, I think.
