Yea, plus that scuba diving is some dangerous shit.

My biggest fear in life is to die drowning. To me that would be a slow death.

I'm in So Cal but NO WAY I'm going to go scuba....just watched the horrific movie "Open Water" last night! [:/] HATE IT, HATE sharks, HATE sharks biting you, scared, scared, scared...good luck though ;).

Only been within 100 feet of a shark once, not so bad... just get to the bottom, they will usually leave you alone...

Baaahhh... I do believe the risk is little higher than Skydiving, but it's another one of those "just pay attention to detail" and "dont do anything stupid" and you'll be fine sports.. As for the drowning, I've heard that it's supposed to be one of the most peaceful ways to die (after the initial panic ofcourse). Besides, that's why your supposed to dive in pairs, so if one person has problems the buddy has air to share.. It just also makes it a harder sport for me to do, as I need someone else to go with unlike skydiving where I can just go by myself if I want..

I've done night scuba diving somewhat close to a tiger shark (not big at all...not scary), and it was fine.

Nate, I would go diving (scuba) with you, but it's been years (and I am a beginner). I don't feel like starting up in this weather, either. :$ (Maybe in the summer, I will feel differently.)

Have fun! :)

I've been learning skydiving and scuba at the same time and I've been struck by the similarities...

...gear checks
...heavy equipment harnessed on your back
...redundant/backup lifesaving systems
...plan your dive, dive your plan works for both sports
...altitude awareness and depth awareness can be equally important

etc.

The difference seems to be that for the most part you have a little more time to make mistakes / fumble around / make decisions in scuba, though it is certainly possible to get yourself into situations where you have to make split-second decisions to save your life (though just like skydiving, a series of preventable mistakes can compound to force you into those split-second decision moments)

Good luck finding someone to dive with - I'd go if I were down there - I'm itching for some warm(er) water diving. Maybe contact a local dive shop to see if they've got any groups going out?

Well, just keep in mind that the water temp really does not change *THAT* much,
But yea, if it's been that long a refresher course may be a good choice... Even though it's not required, one big difference between the sports... you can get certified and not dive for 20 years, your certification is still good... [:/]

yes, many simularities... Both VERY fun to do,..

I just bought some tickets for some boat dives (not scheduled yet).... Got a good deal on them, so if anyone wants to go and they just cant afford to give up the jump money, I may be willing to give one of my tickets free of charge

I guess you have a point, but, at least, getting out of the water is much nicer when it's warmer outside.

I really couldn't stay warm enough when scuba diving, no matter how thick my wetsuits were, so I finally decided to stop. I would love doing it if I could stay warmer. I used to shiver like crazy and always ended up sick, afterwards. :|

I guess now that you mention it, I wouldn't want to do it again in SoCal...anytime soon. I'd need to go to warmer waters.

Yea, that's what I'm talking about. Some place foreign that we can have a cabana boy bring us warm towels when we get out of the water.

Nate, is your cabana boy certification current? ;)

:|:( You know, I skipped that rating, thinking I should look into that now though :P:ph34r:

Check around - I hear there's a new accelerated cabana boy training program that's supposed to be pretty good. You get to front-load the special cabana activities B|. The towel-carrying skill development is a little weak, though; you just have to build those up after you get your certification. Good luck!

Well, you know how it is... The towel-carrying skills are something that you can just work on as you go.. I'm sure all of the important parts are covered in the ACB course... I would definately prefer that than old-school method where they just make you carry towels a bunch of times before you get to take part in all the fun parts of the experience... :P

And in this sport, your equipment will USUALLY function as designed..

The weather just says "Partly cloudy" w/ 10% chance of precep for Jamul (SSD)... I think we should hopefully be able to get some jumps,. . I hope to also go tomorrow, which the weather says PM showers.. we'll see I guess.. Wish I could have not been at work all day today, seemed like a very nice day.

For clarification exactly how do you want the towels carried? This cabana boy babble about towels is giving me this porkies revenge visual and I find it, well disturbing. Its not that I can't carry them that way, I can. Its just been a while. But in these cold waters the towel hook gets a little soft.

BTW the scuba pro steel 92 is charged up and sitting behind me along with some 8 mil suits good to the low 50s.

I haven't seen the movie, so I'm uh... not quite sure what you're referring to (though I have a bit of an idea). Remember, a lot of your cabana boy skills are picked up after training, so you be sure to hang around the cabana after hours asking for tips. I'm sure the skills will come back in no time.
