PhillyKev 0 #26 December 30, 2004 A&P drove themselves out of business. Not satisfied with controlling every aspect of their suppliers, they decided to be their own suppliers and do everything themselves. Started buying up their suppliers. Problem is, they had already pushed them to their limits of staying in business. Then they come along and take over and can't do it as efficiently as the original companies. They were a victim of themselves.

bertusgeert 1 #28 December 30, 2004 yeah, that makes sense.... here is an interesting article I found the other day... We already know that Wal-Mart is the biggest retailer. (If it were an independent nation, it would be China's eighth-largest trading partner.) We also know that it is maniacal about low prices. (Some economists say it has single-handedly cut inflation by 1 percent in recent years, saving consumers billions of dollars annually.) We know that its labor practices have come under attack. (It charges its workers so much for health insurance that about one-third of them do not have it.) The rest can be found at..... http://www.dsausa.org/lowwage/walmart/2004/Wal-Mart%20a%20Nation%20Unto%20Itself.html Its a good and interesting read --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei! I remember doing a report on them going out of business in like 96-97 IIRC. -Blind"If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." BlindBrick 0 #31 December 31, 2004 QuoteCould you give me some examples how anyone can thrive when Wal-mart takes away the customers? Simple, what's proven to be the winning strategy in such cases is to cater to a nique that Wal-Mart doesn't. Wal-Mart doesn't carry a huge assortment of brands of any one item and they definately come up short on specialty merchandise. Basically you shift to a product differentation scheme to counter Wal-Mart's value differentation. The only place that this really doesn't work is the grocery section, but then again Mom & Pops were becoming a dying breed well before Wal-Mart ever rolled out their first Supercenter. A few Wal-Mart related facts to address other posts I've seen here. Wal-Mart is not the country's largest employer, that distinction belongs to a temporary agency though which one eludes me at the moment. Wal-Mart is not doing very well at all overseas with the exception of stores located in places that see heavily US tourist traffic. In particular, Germany has been a bit of a money pit for Wal-Mart. If I'm not mistaken, this was a big reason for the senior level regime change that the corporation went through a few weeks back. WalMart stock will very likely plateu in the relatively near future as the company hits a total market saturation point that even it admits it is nearing. -Blind"If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." PhillyKev 0 #32 December 31, 2004 Wal-Mart is the world’s largest retailer. It is the largest corporation and private employer in the United States. Wal-Mart is the biggest employer in 25 states. They set the standard for wages and labor practices. Wal-Mart employs 1.4 million workers worldwide and over 1 million in the United States. More than half of Wal-Mart’s U.S. employees leave the company each year. Wal-Mart has more than 3,000 stores in the US and almost 1,300 International operations. The Walton family is worth about $102 billion. Wal-Mart ranked #1 on the Fortune 500 list of corporations in 2001. Wal-Mart is the top U.S. seller of products ranging from dog food to diamonds with sales of $244.5 billion in the fiscal year ended January 2003 up from $220 billion in 2001. In 1970, the country's largest employer was General Motors, with 350,000 workers. They earned $17.50 an hour plus health, pension and vacation benefits and cost-of-living increases. Today, the country's largest employer is Wal-Mart, with over 1 million US workers. They earn an average hourly wage of $8.00, with no defined benefit pension, and inadequate health care. Wal-Mart was sued 4,851 times in 2000––or about once every 2 hours, every day of the year. Wal-Mart lawyers list about 9,400 open cases,” according to a report published in the August 14, 2001, USA Today newspaper. Wal-Mart plans to open only 15 to 20 of the traditional food-and-drug combo stores in 2003, down from previous projections of 20 to 25 outlets. It will open 210 supercenters, the high end of its previous development range for that format.
flyangel2 2 #33 December 31, 2004 I'm one of those that loves Wal-Mart for a number of reasons. The Super Wal-Mart is within walking distance of my house. (saves me money on gas) The Super Wal-Mart has just about anything I need, groceries, household items, and even an intertube for my son's bike. (saves me money on gas from having to drive all over town to different stores to get groceries, household items, or new intertube) The bottom line for me is "how much money can I save?" If I can do my shopping in one stop, then I've saved money. My time is also valuable. If I can do my shopping in one stop, instead of driving all over town, I like that. Now, on the other hand I'm one of those that hates Wal-Mart. I hate how Wal-Mart has effected some of the smaller business where I live. I hate the lines at the check out registers. I hate hearing some of the rumors as to how management treads their employees. As I said earlier in this thread, my son works at the Wal-Mart distribution center, and he has been treated awesome, and the health and dental benefits are great. I hasve to grant you the first one, that's what I get for quoting a fact from a textbooks that's a few years old, but nothing else you quoted is germain to the conversation and looks to be pasted directly off a Union website. -Blind"If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." nate_1979 9 #35 December 31, 2004 I'm curious just how many of the people in this thread bashing wal-mart shop there? It is convenient, so yes I will go there, as well as Target and any number of other stores... I usually do not look for the lowest price, as it is usually a minor difference.. Time saving convenience, YES.. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't. PhreeZone 20 #36 December 31, 2004 Nope, I only go there when it is absolutly needed. I drive an extra few miles to get to a grocery store, I go to other stores to buy DVD's and clothes... I generally avoid Wal-Mart as much as I can. The Walmart gift cards I got for Xmas this year wil be spent on things like Foam Noodles to swoop come spring and other stupid little things.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

PhillyKev 0 #38 December 31, 2004 I've been to Walmart twice. First time when one opened near me and I went to see what all the fuss was about since no one could stop talking about how great it was. Took me 45 minutes to find some bath towels, real convenient. Second time was in Rantoul 2 and a half years ago.

PhillyKev 0 #40 December 31, 2004 Every time I went by the dz.com tent it was empty or everyone was passed out. Clay was half awake clutching a stuffed sheep once and I said hi to him....and I was standing in line at Carbone Zone when there was some kind of disturbance involving shouts to call the police emanating from the tent. No idea what that was about, though
