Walmart - little oops

Recommended Posts

Many times Wal-Mart will put something on their web-site before they carry it in the stores to see how well it will sell. Do you thing they sold enough books to make it into the stores?

Do you know that Wal-Mart employees kill kittens too? :D:D:D:D

Wal-Mart is a witch! Therefore, it should be burned at the stake!!

My sons works at the Distribution Center of Wal-Mart unloading trucks. He makes very good money and I am shocked about the insurance benefits they offer.

Yes, Wal-Mart is EVIL....I saw it on South Park :D:D:D:D

You know I saw that episode and it just pissed me off. I don't work for Wal-Mart but I can appreciate how the system works. Capitalism is nothing more than Darwinism in it's purist form. You adapt or you die, it's that simple. I find it especially galling that many shopkeepers would rather whine as they close down their business than look at, and learn from, downtowns that have managed to not just survive but thrive after Wal-Mart came to town.

I would like to see how those downtowns did that. Could you give me some examples how anyone can thrive when Wal-mart takes away the customers?
I agree with your statement... but also understand the other side. If I could always just sit back and sell my stuff without worrying, and I now had to change and go work my ass off to get customers in my store, I might just close down as well. But...thats how it works...competition...

What's an Oligopolies?

Nevermind I looked it up. Fits Walmart to a T :S

It's like a monopoly, but on the demand side. When you have a company like Walmart, the largest company in the world, and the major customer of scores of manufacturers and suppliers, they can put pressure on those manufacturers and suppliers to sell cheaper to them than they do their competition. Basically, they bully their way past the fundamentals of supply and demand and a free market economy by forcing suppliers to price their products based on not going out of business if they lose their main customer, instead of on what the market will bear.

Walmart put Rubbermade out of business in the US. Sent them packing to China so they could continue to supply Walmart with products.

Walmart isn't "Made in America" anymore. About 90% of the products sold in Walmart may be "made" by American companies, but manf. in China.

Gota love PBS and Frontline..

Yeah, that definition fits the impact they have on customers and competitors in the way they price what the sell. They can do that as a result of what I described. That definition is a symtom of an oligopoly. But the real damage comes from their effect on their suppliers.

So how do you stop an oligopoly? the only way is for the government to introduce new laws right? Is that likely? And is this similar to Microsoft's Monopoly in any way?

What is the future for Walmart? Infinite expansion? When are they gonna go International? Will they?

Now THAT is a lotta questions....

"So how do you stop an oligopoly? "

Anti-trust laws

"the only way is for the government to introduce new laws right? "

Or enforce those that already exist.

"And is this similar to Microsoft's Monopoly in any way? "

Similar, but different...worse in my opinion. MS tries to rule the market place by buying up competitors, or by introducing products and features that competitors offer at a lower price or with easier implementation. Walmart does it by bullying suppliers.

"What is the future for Walmart? Infinite expansion? When are they gonna go International? Will they? "

They are already the largest corporation in the world.

I saw a news show recently talking about Wal-Mart, and they mentioned that Wal-Marts percentage of its market doesn't even come close the the percentage The Great Atantic and Pacific Tea Company, (A&P), once held on in the US supermarket business. I was hoping they would explain how A&P lost their market, but they didn't return to the subject. (Today A&P has only 107 stores in 3 states).
