Parachuting Guinea Pig Prankster Caught

Sun Dec 19, 6:11 PM ET

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - An Indiana University student has admitted tossing a guinea pig tied to a makeshift parachute out of an eighth-floor dormitory, police said.

The 19-year-old student, who could face a felony charge of animal cruelty, told IU police that Thursday's incident was a "prank gone bad."

IU police officer Brice Boembeke said the student told police he had intended to retrieve his pet once it floated to safety, but it got stuck in a tree on the way down.

Janitors at Briscoe Quadrangle rescued the animal, which was slightly injured.

Boembeke said the student admitted throwing his pet out the window of an eighth-floor dorm room across the hallway from his own as other students egged him on.

"It seemed like one of those things where somebody had an idea, and it was taken to the next level," he said. "It definitely got out of hand."

A felony charge of animal cruelty has been forwarded to the Monroe County prosecutor's office for review, but no charge had been filed as of Friday afternoon.

Jason Eller, a Bloomington animal control officer, said the student could be ordered to pay a $500 fine for cruelty to an animal. Boembeke said the student might also face some type of disciplinary action from IU.

The guinea pig is doing well at the Bloomington Animal Shelter, where staff named the rodent Noel in honor of the holiday season, said shelter manager Leigh Ann Hoffacker.

Oh, for chrissake! Stupid student jumper steers into a tree, so his JUMPMASTER gets a felony rap???

At my first DZ, there was a doctors kid who made a parachute for his pet mouse. Once in a while the doc would do a pass over the peas at 500' and the kid would pitch the mouse out. The local paper even had a favorable story on it. I suppose if it happened today, the doc would be looking at a felony???

Hmmmmm........Bad spot!

There's a great story of a guy that USED to be in the Air Force. He was a Combat Controller. Seems he made a parachute for a chicken. Tossed it out of a C-141 with a GREAT spot on Luzon DZ, Ft Bragg. Chicken landed fine. He ended up in the Army. 18th Airborne Corps LRSC. :D Apparently Air Force brass didn't have a sense of humor about it.

How ridiculous can you get? Man, these people really need to get a life!!!

Now, I'm not into purposely injuring animals, or anything, but it WAS just innocent fun. I'm also not an animal activist, but it's ok to use guinea pigs for drug/makeup testing, but not parachutes? How wrong is that?

I guess this means my hamster Lightning (for the CRW canopy) won't get to use the gear/chute I was mentally designing for her? :P We were toying with something in the remote control type. Remote control airplane with a slot in the bottom, you remotely open. She goes into freefall and then another button to open the chute for her and then controls that will safely, softly set her onto the ground.

I love my hamster and just want her to be able to enjoy the same thrills I do. She's going to be so heartbroken when I tell her. :(
