murrays 0 #1 December 29, 2004 Hi, My sons, ages 5 and 7, pooled their Christmas money yesterday and bought a Playstation 2. I picked out a game called Tak 2 to get them started. I was wondering what other games would be good ones to get for kids their age and if anybody has some suggestions.....that aren't "KILLZONE" type syggestions Thanks,-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
PhreeZone 20 #2 December 29, 2004 A far far FAR better bet for kids that age would have been a GameCube. I fought my family for days over this at Xmas this year. They all insisted that the kids needed a PS2 and I went out looking, I looked at the games that were on the shelf and when only 5 or out of 60-75 games were in that age group I decided that it probally was'nt the best idea. Looked at the GameCube and saw about 70% of their games were designed for 5-15 year olds. I fought the family and refused to buy the PS2 and told them to get it themselfs, they went and looked at one then looked at games.... They bought a GameCube instead.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
GTAVercetti 0 #3 December 29, 2004 I too would recommend a gamecube. They are pretty cheap nowadays too. However, since the kids already bought a PS2, you could get: Harry Potter games Jak & Daxter (probably not Jak 2 and 3 cause the content is a bit darker) Rachet & Clank (has guns, but when you "kill" something, they explode into bolts, not blood) Shrek games Racing games tend to be non-violent Kingdom Hearts - Disney and Squaresoft. If kids can take the darkness of Snow White then this should be ok More if I think of em.Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. PhreeZone 20 #5 December 29, 2004 I picked up a GameCube, the Mario racing game, 2 controllers and a memory stick new at BestBuy for $138. Try to top that on the PS2.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
PhillyKev 0 #6 December 29, 2004 QuoteHow about a bike or a set of outdoor shoes? "Merry Christmas, no game boy for you, here are some shoes." You should go join the "Am I scrooge" thread.
DJL 235 #7 December 29, 2004 Oooh, where is that, I'd like it. My sister wanted a heart monitor for running and I was really tempted to just get her a tape recording that says, "Speed up now......a little faster...ok, faster now..." Along with my tounge-in-cheek I'll clarify that I'm sure Murray is capable of deciding how much inside vs. outside time his kids are getting."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
flyangel2 2 #8 December 29, 2004 Nope, he's not a scrooge. I didn't buy the game systems or games for my boys. They had to earn their own money to but those items. Doing it that way I think teaches the kids how to budget. It's an item they really want, so why not teach them about the value of money and how a budget works?May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. Slappie 9 #9 December 29, 2004 I guess I'm a bit more liberal when it comes to games and gaming. My gf's boy is 8yo and has a PS2 he's playing Harry Potter games and some of the others in this thread. He also plays on the PC.. He plays UT2k4 (online but he gets owned) He's also played some of my Doom 3. He totaly understands it's just a game. Guess it depends on the maturity of the children. sunshine 2 #11 December 29, 2004 You can still get playstation1 games too. All the Crash Bandicoots are cool. Along with Croc and Croc2. My personal fave is 40winks. Good on you for not wanting them to play violent games. My 2 nephews are 5 & 7. They have an Xbox and play Mortal Kombat set to the extra bloody setting. My sister doesn't care at all about monitoring what they play. Edited cause i'm not a fighter game geekette!! ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! These the kids that live on the pig farm? If so their used to all the blood and guts I mean wasn't it discussed here one time, the best way to dispose of a dead body would be to chop it up and feed it to the pigs on a pig farm? Though i think they're good boys, i have no idea if all that blood and violence of killing someone on a video game will affect them later. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! Slappie 9 #14 December 29, 2004 Want to see (read) the reaction kids today have to playing games we thought were awesome badass when they came out? check this out QuoteAdventure (Atari 2600 * 1978) The first action role-playing game, Adventure sent its dot-size hero--armed with an arrow-shaped sword--into dungeons inhabited by dragons that even the game's creator admits look like water fowl. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bobby: A duck ate me. EGM: What ate you? Parker: A pink duck. EGM: What do you think this character's name is? Parker: Dot. Or Adventure? That's what this game is, isn't it? Go up, go up, go up. Bobby: Stupid duck. I hate the duck. The duck is evil. "Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them." EGM: [Laughing] So those are the two things that make you think that's not Mike Tyson? Garret: Yeah, plus this guy's wearing pants. HAHAHHA! Anyway, back to the games for kids. Sly Cooper is another VERY FUN and good game for the kids. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.
murrays 0 #18 December 29, 2004 QuoteHow about a bike or a set of outdoor shoes? QuoteHow about a bike or a set of outdoor shoes? Bought a new pair of skates for the 5 year old yesterday too ... if it wasn't -28C with the wind chill here they'd be outside skating later this afternoon. I'm not going to let them become total couch potatoes. We bought the PS2 because 3 of their friends on the block also have them and it gives them the ability to use each other's games. When I was in the store looking at games I thought the selection for younger kids was better on the Gamecube...and it was less $$$ but being able to trade games with other kids might save us quite a bit of $$ as well. Thanks everybody for the suggestions and recommendations. I'll use them when they get tired of Tak2 and I have to buy them something new. PS - Regarding the pig farm....Robert Pickton of Abbotsford BC has been charged with over 20 murders of prostitutes whose bodies he ground up and scattered on his pig farm. They have had people sifting through the soil at his place for over a year now finding tiny bone fragments....maybe not the best way to dispose of bodies.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
Thanatos340 1 #19 December 29, 2004 I have two Neices that are the same age, I got them the DDR Max 2 Game and a Dance Pad for their PS2 for Christmas. They loved it. The best thing about these games is that they are somewhat athletic and get the kids off their Ass while playing games. I am not sure if Boys the same age would like it as much but I know the Adults were fighting with the kids over who goes next.
GTAVercetti 0 #20 December 29, 2004 Hell, I too know many adults who love DDR. That is a very athletic and addicting game. I second that nomination! Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.
