Wood Bridge Contest

Recommended Posts

Curious:

Has anyone here (or your kids) participated when in high school in the wood bridge building contest, either at the school, regional, national or international level?

This is the contest where you build a model wood bridge from basswood sticks and then test its load carrying capacity before it breaks.

It's being going for 30+ years.

In Texas the "big" contest is the Texas BEST competition, not really the bridge. Then again, the local TI (Texas Instruments) tend to really help out the high schools with parts, money and even a couple of engineers to help the team in the design process.

I'm not sure if they have BEST up where yall are or not.

That's the link to the overall BEST contests.

As a side note, something I didn't know even though I participated with BEST a couple of years, was the it originated in Sherman, Texas (my hometown) due to a couple of Texas Instruments engineers getting motivated in 1993.

That's neat.

My daughters team was regional champ in the "SET IT FREE" balsawood odyssey of the mind in 1989 ... They were 2nd place at state...:)
They had to build a tower with a ping-pong ball inside of it and when the tower crushed the ping-pong ball needed to be thrown from the tower with out any damage...

Killer...

You have your PMs turned off again. I wanted to let you know I got the DVD the other day. Sat down and watched it right away. Thanks so much for taking the time to put that together. I love the mix of music you used.

It was part of the Science Olympiad back when I was in school. I did ok one year and got totally destroyed one year when most the rest of the teams soaked their balsa in epoxy to stiffen the balsa far beyond what balsa should ever hold.

Yea we had done it my senior year in high school... 2 years ago.... But see half of us had the wood bridge half of us had to you spagetti noodles (uncooked) obviously. I got the thrill of having spagetti noodles. It was a big mess of glue but it actually worked It took 2 whole weeks for me and my group of 4 to make. Then we had to sit there and watch it get destroyed....
