shropshire 0 #1 January 2, 2005 Hi Peeps - Does anyone have any experience of indoor cycle training aids? I'd like to use my own bike because the indoor cycles that I've used in the past are poor substitutes for the real thing ... I've seen different devices that I can attach my bike to, some use air resistance (like the rowing machines) - but these would be too noisy (I guess), then there appears to be fluid and magnetic resistance ones ... any advice? flyhi 24 #3 January 2, 2005 Nashbar has as good a selection as you probably want. Their price is about the best, too. Mag trainers hook onto the rear wheel and you can adjust the resistance. They are relatively simple to use and can be relatively inexpensive. You can also get a wind device that you can redirect to cool you. You will sweat, my friend. Down side is they do nothing to promote technique and some people think they put an unnatural strain on the bike. Had a friend train exclusively on one (winter in Maryland) and qualify for the Ironman. So they do work. Rollers promote a more natural stroke and require some technique to use and not fall off. If you get these, it is best to set them up in a doorway the first time. They require you to pay more attention which means your form does not deteriorate as much. Easier to get hurt on these as some people have fallen off while riding. Either one is better than nothing, but they can be boring. You must be motivated. Best to set them up someplace cold. You will work up a sweat. Make sure you wipe down your bike after every work out. Sweat is corrosive. Be especially careful around the head. It can seep in there and cause a major problem.Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.
