ACMESkydiver 0 #1 January 3, 2005 Ok, so I haven't been inside a classroom in myeh, about 8 years or so...today at 1pm I will be in 'college'. EEEGAD!!! So I'm pestering my 8 year old daughter today, "But I'm scared!! What do I do? What if the other kids don't like me? What if I can't hear my teacher? Will you come to school with me, Sprouty-girl??" To which my youngster rolls her eyes and says, "Geez mom...you just have to make friends. I made friends on my first day of school. It's easy!" Easy for an 8 year old. Think I'll just sit in the back and slouch a lot. I hope I don't get called on...I hope I don't get called on... I don't think I'll tell anybody that I'm a skydiver. Then they might expect that I know some sh*t about velocity and thermals and wind and crap... Any other older students venturing back and kinda nervous?~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
freeflir29 0 #2 January 3, 2005 Quote"Geez mom...you just have to make friends. I made friends on my first day of school. It's easy!" Easy for an 8 year old. Just take plenty of extra cup cakes in your lunch. Never underestimate the power of buying friends. Of course....since you are 30 you might also consider wearing a short skirt. Never underestimate the power of a short skirt. Seriously....I guess I would be nervous too. Last college course I took was in 1998. It was easy though. I was going to school on an Army post. Class was all Army....which typically aren't too bright. This class....was VERY typical.

Dougiefresh 0 #5 January 3, 2005 I've been in school (mostly) since I was 4. I'm still scared every day. Don't worry, just talk the person next to you, make a study group, and get involved mentally and physically with the work. Don't isolate yourself, that just makes it harder than it needs to be. Do as I say, not as I do. Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams

Class was all Army....which typically aren't too bright. This class....was VERY typical. That's funny, my last classes were on Ft. Lewis!! Our instructor was awesome...he told us "Basically, if you show up to my class as scheduled, you'll get an 'A'." Of course it was a weather class, and we were all Army or dependants...so lying on the grass pointing at clouds: "Cumulo-nimble." "Nope, I'm sure it's strato-phonic." "Check it out!! That one looks like a bunny!!" I was 7 months pregnant as I recall and nearly passed out in his class and I still got a 4.0! ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. lawrocket 3 #8 January 3, 2005 Welcome back to those restless college years. Of course you should be worried, concerned, scared, etc. If you weren't concerned, it would mean you don't care. If you don't care, you won't succeed. Congrats! Hug them kiddies, too. My wife is hotter than your wife.

ChasingBlueSky 0 #10 January 3, 2005 I work with non-traditional students on a daily basis and have been for a few years now. It is always harder being a non-traditional student. Your responsibilities are greater, there is more going on in your life, you have kids and bills. Plus you haven't had to work on a school schedule with homework, study time, stress of grades, paperwork, etc in years. Everything you had to do in the past while in school (sans party time) will have to fit in with your current lifestyle. Then there is always the fear of the unknown, the financial investment and the risk that you may not be able to successfully use the new education in the real world (that's more for the career changers than those upgrading a career). I've seen thousands of people do it - you can as well as long as you have the motivation, dedication and passion. With those three things any sacrifice you have to make will be small and easy to overcome because you will want to be in school trying to improve yourself. If you don't have those three things it will be easy to make an excuse to not study, miss class or drop out. Just make sure you have the support from your family - it's hard to overcome obstacles without them._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Dumpster 0 #12 January 3, 2005 Just imagine where I'm at going back to school at the tender age of 42! I just bought a case of beer with me - We drank it in the parking lot. Easy Does It
turtlespeed 226 #13 January 3, 2005 Baby doll - you will be fine! There are few out there as caring and as sweet as you are. As much as you like to tell a good story, you can listen to them as well, that earmarks a good friend. Besides - if all else fails just tell them that you just got out of jail, all the kids like the Rebel personality. Good luck - as if you'll need it. I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun

RoysPlayThing 0 #23 January 5, 2005 Yeah, I've been through this before... it is perfectly natural. What you need to do is instead of sitting in the back of the class and slouch, do everything that you are thinking in the opposite.... A few pointers for a successful schooling experience.... 1. Sit in the front of the classroom... insist you have the nearest desk to the teacher. 2. Be a teachers pet.... the brainiac's just love that, and that will get you in on the tutoring and such. 3. Smile at the nerds ... They will help you out with your homework later. 4. carry your books home in your arms instead of using a backpack (are you walking home?.. that is a plus) Good exercise and you will get great forearms and no bullies will mess with you.. .... Its perfectly normal to be nervous going back to school no matter what age... but just remember... Use a good deodorant... and try not to sweat. _______________________________________________ My mind is like a parachute...it functions only when open.
