bshl 0 #1 January 6, 2005 The story as I received it: Here's what happens when you don't properly "NOTAM" (notice to airmen) an airfield under construction. Last week, one C-23 Sherpa flew into a U.S. operated airfield in Iraq during the day and saw there was construction equipment on the runway. Yet there was no NOTAM. A trench was being dug in the runway, and it was not marked. It's a long runway and they just landed beyond the construction. They filed a safety hazard report that was immediately forwarded to our higher headquarters and to the Air Force wing based here. Well, it seems the construction continued and still was not marked or NOTAM'ed or anything. A C-130 landed on the runway the night of the 29th and didn't see the construction. It wound up going through what is now a large pit on the runway. A few pictures are attached. The C-130 was totaled. There were several injuries to the crew and the few passengers that were on board but luckily nobody was killed. Quite the set of failures somewhere in the system regarding this improper construction and no notifications about it. Blue skies and happy landings! mr2mk1g 10 #2 January 6, 2005 Someone's head should roll. People could have been killed and millions of $$ of taxpayers money has been wasted all because a few people were too lazy and stupid to do their job right. I mean seriously... you dig a chuffing great hole in an active runway and don't even bother to tell anyone?

Rebecca 0 #5 January 6, 2005 ARRRRGHHH!!! GD!!! That poor C-130! That poor pilot! Can you imagine the poor guy's/gal's face when that gaping hole loomed up at them? I had a big tirade about accountability and stuff, but it won't do much good anyway. What a waste. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? jimmytavino 16 #6 January 6, 2005 Damn !!!! glad there were no fatals..... here's what i think....... the local mechanics had put in requisitions for replacement parts for C -130s... they received NONE........ Instead, through the beauty of bureaucracy, what they DID get,, were,,, a backhoe,, a front end loader,,, 500 pounds of tnt,,, and NO instructions,,,,, ....... so.... they dug this HUGE pit ( just like the Paleo-Indians used to kill Mastodons and Bison ),, and they Trapped themselves a GEN - U - WINE!!.. Hercules... C 130....... NOW they have at least a FEW spare parts,,,,in case they need a spinner for a prop.... or maybe a dashboard switch.......or some specialty bolt... ............ (Sounds Like the US Defense Department to me....)...... Military Intelligence In Action... or should that be Milit. Intel.. INACTION....... ok ok just teasing here,,,, please don't bombard me with accusations... that i am anti- Military or anti US....I'm just trying to crack-up my fellow dz dot commers.....How'd i do????? jmy

Zoter 0 #10 January 6, 2005 Doesnt the Pilot have to call in to the field/station tower before landing?? Is there any contact between the pilot and someone ON the airfield prior to landing....? I'm assuming that if they were landing there .....the field must have been occupied by miltary personnel...and as such had a duty CO there somewhere? skydiver30960 0 #15 January 6, 2005 C'mon guys, given the standard for jump aircraft, I'm sure there isn't a member on this site that hasn't jumped a rickety old bird that would make that C-130 look like a Lear! That reminds me of the scene in Apocalypse Now... where the Martin Sheen character is in a tunnel/ foxhole complex where ALL these bullets are flyin'.. and missles are blowin' up,, and noise everywhere,, and soldiers, firing off hundreds of rounds a minute,,, at "no specific target",,, and chaos and calamity everywhere...... And he grabs some young kid who's holding a rifle,, and asks him,, "Who's In Charge around here !!???"... and the soldier looks at him with these WILD eyes,,, and replies......... .......... AIN'T YOU!!!!!!??????
