Military Pilot Career

Recommended Posts

I might as well ask out loud, since there is a lot of people here from all over that can give me all kinds of feedback.

Like most of us, I have always dreamed of flying, and I am now looking at my options as a pilot in the military. (I do plan on finishing my degree, which luckily in America is preferred)

From what I have heard, Air Force is the easy way to go, Army is the tough way. Army has choppers though, which would by much more fun, but then again, chopper hours aren't as valuable as C-130 hours when looking at an airline job later in life.

Also, I am an Australian citizen, which I believe I will have to forfeit when entering the military.
If anyone knows anything about the RAAF's pilot programs, please let me know, since I am considering it as well.

If I join the American Military, what is my chances of being deployed overseas for how long? (Not that this bothers me). Also, how is room for advancement?

And another - anyone that can tell me about Special Forces and flying for them, that would be great.

What would you do? What did you do? Why? Did you make good or bad choices? are you happy with your choices?

Thanks all.....:)

To be a pilot in the US Military, you must be a US Citizen and either a Commissioned Officer or a Warrant Officer. Non citizens cannot get the requisite security clearance for aviation jobs.

My advice: Pursue the RAAF option.

My mistake, let me clarify.

I have been in the US for 4 years now, have had my greencard for 1.5 now (citizenship pending), with my parents, brother and sister in the same boat. I have heard many times that this is not a problem, and they (the gov) will actually speed up the process to make you a citizen if you so choose (to join certain parts of the military).

(or... growing up in South Africa, I guess I could always pursue that option!!!:D)

I see. So I wait for my citizenship, receive it sometime in the next few years, in which time I finish college. Is this a problem and will i still be able to continue on like everyone else?

Is the rules thus the same for ANG, Navy, Army, Coast Guard and Marines?

Also on the side, is there any careers in the intellegence field that my multinational background would be an advantage rather than a drawback? (this is probably not the case)

Hi guy

Talk to the recruiter's of the military services about your goals and questions.:P Their real nice folks :)and will try and give you all the info you need includeing colored pictures, shiny literature, posters, maybe even a DVD or VHS tape and some decals.:)
Do not under any circumstances sign anything, ever, even a piece of paper saying that you were there. Believe nothing they tell you but listen to what they are saying. Be strong do not sign anything:|

Trust me:P;):S

I just got accepted into the university air squadron here in Bristol(England). Basically, I do my degree, and at the same time complete the first 60 hours of military flight training(and get paid for it:)
I thought there would be similar facilities for the RAAF?? You could look here www.raaf.gov.au if you havent already.

Also, if you do intend to finish your degree you should check age requirements, for the RAF you have to be under 23 years 6 months old on graduation.

Like I said I was only recently accepted so I wouldn't call myself an expert but I'm more than happy to help you out if you've got questions about selection processes/training etc...

Forgot to say, I'm Irish and was eligible to join because my dad was born in England, There's also a South African on the squadron. Im pretty sure any citizen of the commonwealth is eligible. Just throwing out another option for ya, but it is fairly cold here and the place is full of brits:P.

The Navy is the same with regards to citizenship. Your foreign birth would preclude you from going into the intelligence community in all likelihood.

Master Chief Ballard or Ms. Kim Chatman @ 502-425-0435 in Louisville would be able to give you any info you're wanting.

If you want to fly for the US Military, then the Marines is actually your best bet. Most everyone who wants to (and is qualified) is able to. It's harder through the Air Force, which you actually would have a better change joining the Air National Guard, particularly since you sound like you aren't as interested in a fighter position.

I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
