main and reserve canopy size

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the skydiving sport and was wondering what size (sqft) canopy i should purchase. I'm 5'8" and weigh about 160lbs. I have been looking into the aerodyne pilot for the main and the aerodyne smart for my reserve. if someone could let me know about this matter that would be great.

Regards Nate

Have you learned about wingloading yet? Wingloading is the ratio between total suspended weight and the square footage of the canopy. This includes the rig, the canopy, everything. You're looking for a first canopy with a wingloading no higher than 1:1. That is one lbs per square foot of canopy.

Beyond that, please talk to your local instructors and check out some of the articles on DZ.com about choosing your canopies. Good luck!

To emphasize what he said, I go 150-155 on the scale stepping into the shower.
I go 195 on the exact same scale with all my gear. Jumpsuit, helmet, altimiter and rig (Talon with a 190 Triathlon, PD 176R and Cypress).
Especially with larger gear (like lower experience jumpers should have) the weight of the gear is more than you might expect.
